Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st April, 2011

Today's weather;

Things are definitely on the up, Samui woke up under sunshine this morning! Motorbikes are moving around again in front of our house in Plai Laem on a road that had unprecedented levels of water on it. The current temp at 7am is 24.7C

Most roads around Koh Samui are fine again, some have a few puddles on it and some are still flooded, overall though, things are improving and especially having a forecast with 7 days of more or less sunshine will definitely improve things around all three Gulf islands.
Yesterday saw some bits of rain but just 8mm over the last 24 hrs. Max temp reached 25.5C

Wading and swimming in the water near Donsak

For all people contacting me, last night I answered emails and messages on my blog for over 5 hours, from 18.30 onwards last night. A lot of the questions are very repetitious and I must first of all thank you all for showing support, especially David and Peter for their generous donation and Robert as well.

-However, please keep in mind that I do NOT have lists of individual hotels and their current state. If I stumble over one or hear about one I will post it here on my blog.

-If you're planning to visit Koh Samui within a week or so, expect a damaged island with a lot of clean up and repair work going on. I'm sure that hotels that aren't affected will do their uttermost best to accommodate you but Samui won't be at it's prettiest!

-If you're planning to visit Samui around mid April, I would expect a lot of damage and debris been taken care of and your visit should be fine.

-Anybody planning on visiting towards the end of April or early May or even later, don't worry. Do not reschedule for November, that's usually Samui's rainy season!

-The weather forecast for the next 7 days is good, with plenty of sunshine, no wind and just a few occasional drops of rain. I can only hope that the weather will be as it usually is during April and that's HOT!

-Due to the overwhelming amount of mails and messages, I won't be able to answer each individual mail or message anymore at the rate they're coming in, please accept my apologies for that but please read the above, it should answer 99% of all questions! Questions out of the ordinary I will definitely answer.

-As before, please support my blog with either donations, hitting the beer allowance buttons or keep booking your future hotel stays on Samui and around Thailand on my Samui hotel recommendation blog or Thailand hotel recommendation blog. Please bookmark them.

-For information about Koh Tao, check out Ayesha's blog on Koh Tao, she claims that all is fine on Koh Tao and they never had food or drinking water shortages and should be up for diving and business as usual later today!
For Koh Phangan updates check out the 'My Jungle life' blog for updates.
For Phuket updates, check out Jamie's Phuket weather blog.

In the meantime, Koh Lanta woke up to a lightly cloudy sky and it looks like more sunshine may be ours later today and yesterday saw actually bits and pieces of sunshine with a few rare drops of rain, the dive boats went out yesterday! Current temp at 7am is 24C and max temp reached 28.2C yesterday.

The biggest concern right now is still the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat and all of a sudden the province of Krabi with it's landslides.

So far 13 people have been confirmed to have died as a result of the recent weather in Southern Thailand.
Especially the Ban Ton Harn Ville in Khao Phanom district has been hit hard. Luckily there has also been a feel good story, at least partially!

I'm looking forward to a speedy recovery for Koh Samui and all affected areas and that rebuilding may lead to a good job done and will prevent unnecessary and avoidable flood situations.

Goodbye to March 2011

Goodbye to March 2011

This has been a very memorable March indeed. It all started out very good with a successful PADI IE for my candidates on Koh Lanta, directly followed the next day by a the Care for Cancer 10km run I did on Koh Samui in a personal best time.

My wife's youngest sister got wed and a good time and party was had by all on 14th March.

The 18th March saw some rain and there were a few flash floods, nothing too serious and looking at pictures of Samui some 7 years ago was great as well.

Work wise things were really shaping up, PADI IDC's scheduled in Gili Air in Indonesia in late April and things got even better with an IDC scheduled in Osan in South Korea in late June! Great news! It got even better and 22nd March I received news that for the 5th consecutive year in a row, since it's introduction by PADI Asia Pacific, I received the Platinum rating, a rating that allows me to become one of only 57 PADI Course Directors worldwide to earn this level of recognition! Good times!

Come the 26th March and I'm on the road again in order to start teaching an IDC on Koh Lanta. Stock up on food and drinks at home for the family and off I am. There was bad weather and big waves predicted but the trip over to Donsak was smooth but to my big surprise, the road from the ferry to the highway, a stretch of just 25km was flooded near the highway and travelling on was seriously interrupted! The picture above shows people waiting for things to happen that day near where the road is flooded.

I barely make it to the highway and can continue my way to Koh Lanta, where I arrive safely. The rest is history! The South of Thailand is hit by serious flooding, the worst that I can remember in my 12 years!
The road between Krabi and Surat Thani is now also closed due to water damage, so getting back to Samui in due time, may be a bit of a challenge!

My blog here goes crazy with over 10.000 visits and over 20.000 page views, popular posts are when the airport was closed and the video's.
Yesterday it really took off when Samui, Koh Tao and the South became world news!

If you're interested in updates on Phuket, please check Jamie's Phuket weather blog, he has some good and fair news on the Phuket area.

Currently the situation is getting better, I can only hope that the weather forecast for the next 7 days, being very sunny and now ind or rain, will continue just like April should be!

Thanks for all the support and I hope you will keep checking in when things return to normal again! If you want to book your hotels on Koh Samui for your next trip, please use my Samui hotel recommendation blog with a personalized view on the hotels listed!

How To Commute To POEA Or Philippine Overseas Employment Administration

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, most commonly known as POEA, is situated at the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila. You can get to it from any far flung areas both inside and outside Metro Manila by a bus ride. All passenger buses that ply the route of north to south of Metro Manila and vice versa pass by POEA. The only thing to remember is the "Ortigas Ilalim" wording that must be present at the sign of the bus you're going to ride, regardless of where you'll be coming form - Alabang, Baclaran, FTI, Novaliches, Fairview, Monumento or Malanday. The nearest train station walking distance to POEA is MRT-3 Ortigas Station.

FROM MRT-3 TAFT AVENUE STATION

If you're riding an MRT train that comes from Taft Station, alight at Ortigas Station, then after passing through the turnstile (exit machine where you insert your card), you must turn left to go down the stairway that lead to pedestrian footbridge which is located beneath Ortigas Station yet above the busy highway of EDSA. Use this footbridge to go to the opposite side of EDSA. If you turn right after you pass through the turnstile, you will not be able to cross EDSA as the stairway leads directly to the ground going to SM Mega Mall.

Once you reach the opposite side of EDSA also known as the south bound lane, go down and walk northward to get to Ortigas Avenue where POEA is situated. If you don't know your north, just walk opposite the direction of the vehicles passing through EDSA.

FROM MRT-3 NORTH AVENUE STATION

If you ride a train that comes from North Station of MRT-3, get off the train at Ortigas Station, go down and walk back northward to get to Ortigas Avenue where POEA is located. This is because the train has already past Ortigas Avenue before it stop at Ortigas Station.

MRT-3 Ortigas Station is not exactly located at the corner of Ortigas Avenue. You need to walk an approximately 580 meters or .58 kilometer from the foot of Ortigas Station up to the building of POEA. See map at the bottom of this post.

I think, it's just a short walk and a good exercise for our body. Considering the perennial traffic along EDSA, the fast travel MRT gives outweigh the convenience of getting to the exact location of POEA by bus, which is by the way takes longer time to get to a destination. The long duration of time buses spend in bus bays and loading areas extends the time to your travel even more.

But if you're coming from a far location like Alabang or Monumento and you want to economize, bus ride is practical. Going to POEA from those locations by bus takes only one ride. Just make sure you put time allowance on your travel to be on time.

Here are the detailed directions and routes from different parts of Metro Manila as well as nearby provinces to POEA: (Note: All directions here are the same routes to take if you're coming to Robinson's Galleria, Holiday Inn, EDSA Shrine, Eton Cyberpod Corinthian and Ortigas Center CBD. Watch out for my post on how to get to individual buildings situated inside the Central Business District of Ortigas Center)

Route #1

From Alabang, Muntinlupa, Metropolis Star Mall, Filinvest City, Festival Mall, Pacita, Muntinlupa, provinces of Batangas, Laguna, Quezon and areas located near to these locations.

If you're far from Alabang, just go to the bus bay or loading area located near Sogo Alabang which is adjacent to Metropolis Starmall. From far places mentioned above, ride a bus or jeep bound for Alabang.

In Alabang ride a bus with any of these signs: "Monumento Ortigas Ilalim", "Fairview Ortigas Ilalim", "Novaliches Ortigas Ilalim", "Malanday Ortigas Ilalim" etc. Dont take bus with "Ortigas Ibabaw" on its sign. Ask the conductor to drop you off at Ortigas or POEA. A lot of passengers will alight at Ortigas Avenue. Some buses also have "POEA" on their signs.

After you get off the bus at Ortigas, use the footbridge to get to the opposite corner of EDSA-Ortigas where POEA is located.

If you want to use MRT, then alight at Magallanes Station of MRT-3, ride a North bound train and alight at Ortigas Station.

Route #2

From Caloocan, Monumento, Malanday, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Ever Gotesco Grand Central and nearby areas.

Ride a bus with any of these signs: "Alabang Ortigas Ilalim", "Baclaran Ortigas Ilalim", "Sucat Ortigas Ilalim", "Ayala Leveriza Ortigas Ilalim", etc. Some buses add "POEA" wording on the signs. If there's no buses going to these destinations at your location, ride a jeepney bound for Monumento and ride right there. You can also ride one of these buses at 5th Avenue corner Rizal Avenue in Caloocan.

When paying, tell the conductor your destination as "POEA". The bus will stop exactly at the bus bay few meters from POEA.

If you want to use the train, then get off the bus as it stops at MRT-3 North Avenue Station. Ride a train bound for Taft and get off at Ortigas Station.

Route #3

From Cavite, Tagaytay, Imus, Dasmarinas, Bacoor, Paranaque, Pasay, Baclaran and nearby areas.

From your location ride a bus or jeepney bound for Baclaran. In Baclaran, go to the bus bay or loading zone located near to the gate of Redemptorist Church. As in Route #1, ride a bus with any of these signs: "Monumento Ortigas Ilalim", "Fairview Ortigas Ilalim", "Novaliches Ortigas Ilalim", "Malanday Ortigas Ilalim" etc. Dont take bus with "Ortigas Ibabaw" on its sign. Ask the conductor to drop you off at Ortigas or POEA. A lot of passengers will alight at Ortigas Avenue. Some buses also have "POEA" on their signs.

If you're from any locations in Pasay, just ride a jeepney to EDSA, and wait for these buses at any loading area nearest to you.

From MOA, ride a jeepney bound for "Malibay" or "Sucat" and "Alabang". Alight at unloading area near to Heritage Hotel which is located at the corner of EDSA and Roxas Boulevard. Ride same bus and alight at Ortigas Ilalim.

From unloading area in Ortigas which is located in front of Robinson's Galleria, use the footbridge and go to the opposite corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue where POEA is located.

If you want to use the train, then alight at Taft if you have Stored Value ticket for MRT-3. If you don't have Stored Value ticket, get off the bus at Magallanes Station. Ride a train bound for North and alight at Ortigas Station.

Taft Station is always jam-packed. The lines are terrible. It takes almost forever just to buy a one way ticket even if you fall in line of "Exact Fare" window. So if you don't have Stored Value ticket, just ride the train at Magallanes where both passengers riding the train and buying tickets are few.

Route #4

From Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Ilocos and other provinces in Northern Luzon. You can ride a bus or FX with terminal located anywhere in EDSA e.g. JAC Liner, Lucena Bus, Tritran and Victory Liner. All of these buses has terminal located along EDSA, particularly in GMA Kamuning area and Cubao where there's also Baliwag Transit Terminal.

If you ride an FX with terminal located at SM North EDSA and Trinoma, just walk towards EDSA.

Along EDSA, go to the nearest bus bay or loading area and ride a bus with any of these signs: "Alabang Ortigas Ilalim", "Baclaran Ortigas Ilalim", "Sucat Ortigas Ilalim", "Ayala Leveriza Ortigas Ilalim", etc. Some buses add "POEA" wording on the signs.

When paying, tell the conductor your destination as "POEA". The bus will stop exactly at the bus bay or unloading area few meters from POEA.

If you want to ride the train instead, go to the nearest MRT-3 station (e.g. North Station, Quezon Avenue Station, GMA-Kamuning Station, Cubao Station, etc), ride a train bound for Taft and alight at Ortigas Station.

Route #5

From Quiapo, Recto, Legarda, Pureza, SM Centerpoint, V. Mapa and other areas near to these locations.

Ride a colored green air conditioned G-Liner bus with "Taytay" sign. When paying, tell the conductor to drop you off at POEA. The conductor will announce the arrival to POEA by loudly saying "EDSA", "POEA", "Robinson's" and "Galleria".

Route #6

From Ermita, Malate, Robinson's Place Manila, Mabini, M.H. Del Pilar, Pedro Gil and other areas near to these locations.

Option #1. Ride a jeepney bound for Quiapo and in Quiapo near the only pedestrian overpass, ride a colored green air conditioned G-Liner bus with "Taytay" signs. When paying, tell the conductor to drop you off at POEA. The conductor will announce the arrival to POEA by loudly saying "EDSA", "POEA", "Robinson's" and "Galleria".

Option #2. Walk or ride a jeepney to LRT-1 which is in Taft Avenue. Ride a "Baclaran" bound train at any LRT-1 station (e.g. Central Terminal if you're from Intramuros, Manila City Hall or SM City Manila; U.N. Aveneu Station; Pedro Gil Station, Quirino Statio; Vito Cruz Station). Alight at EDSA Station. Use the footbridge that connects LRT-1 to MRT-3. Ride an MRT-3 train bound for North Avenue. Alight at Ortigas Station.

If you're in Delpan or J.P. Rizal, ride a jeepney with "Guadalupe Ilalim" sign. If you're from Fort Bonifacio or Global city and Taguig etc, ride a jeepney with "Guadalupe" sign. From Chino Roces, ride a jeep with "Mantrade" sign.

These jeepneys' last stop is in EDSA where you can ride a bus with any of these signs: "Monumento Ortigas Ilalim", "Fairview Ortigas Ilalim", "Novaliches Ortigas Ilalim", "Malanday Ortigas Ilalim" etc.

If you want to ride a train, then just go up the Guadalupe Station or Magallanes Station, ride a train bound for North Avenue Station and alight at Ortigas Station.

Route #8

From Pasig Palengke, EDSA-Shaw Crossing, EDSA Central, Kalentong, Boni Mandaluyong, Pioneer and other areas near to these locations. If you're from Pasig Palengke, ride a jeepney bound for Quiapo. In EDSA, ride a bus with any of these signs: "Monumento Ortigas Ilalim", "Fairview Ortigas Ilalim", "Novaliches Ortigas Ilalim", "Malanday Ortigas Ilalim" etc. Dont take bus with "Ortigas Ibabaw" on its sign. Ask the conductor to drop you off at Ortigas or POEA. A lot of passengers will alight at Ortigas Avenue. Some buses also have "POEA" on their signs.

Route #9

From Marikina, Sta Lucia East, Robinson's Metro East, Santolan Pasig, Katipunan, Anonas, Project 4, Cubao and other areas near to these locations.

First, you need to go to Cubao. You can go to the nearest LRT-2 Station (e.g. Santolan Station, Katipunan Station, Anonas Station) and ride a train bound for Recto Station and alight at Araneta Center Cubao Station. Or you can ride a bus or jeepney bound for Cubao or Recto and alight at Araneta Center Cubao.

Second, you can either ride a train bound for Taft at MRT-3 Araneta Center Cubao Station and alight at Ortigas Station, or ride a bus with "Ortigas Ilalim" on its sign and get off the bus at Ortigas corner EDSA where POEA is just a few meters away. If you use the train, you need to walk around 580 meters or more than half a kilometer to POEA. Traveling by train as I've already said is faster than bus even if the bus stop right in front of POEA. The main sign of the bus you're going to ride must be any of these: "Alabang Ortigas Ilalim", "Baclaran Ortigas Ilalim", "Sucat Ortigas Ilalim", "Ayala Leveriza Ortigas Ilalim"

Route #10

Koh Samui and Koh Tao flood update, March 2011

Koh Samui and Koh Tao flood update, March 2011

Things are starting to look slightly better again on Koh Samui. As already mentioned, the ferries are up and running, also between the islands the ferries are up and running again and the airport is in full swing. The next thing will be to start cleaning up, especially with clear skies and no wind being predicted for the next week. After that, damage assessment and repair work will start, the mayor expects apparently at least 5 month before everything is fixed and repaired. Be advised that this statement implies all damage, the major problems should be tackled immediately.

Many things need to be re stocked though, currently the island is out of gasoline and diesel, there's a 4km tail back at the Chaweng PTT gas station and at the airport are apparently still around 1.500 people waiting to be flown out. Besides water in various and the usual places, things are on the way up! With the ferries running again, I would expect food supplies to be coming in again and the shelves at the supermarkets should be stocked again in a few days.

The Samui Triathlon, scheduled for 24th April has been cancelled as a result of the current rain damage.

Ring road surface damage, just the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid.

To all people that send emails and left messages on this blog, I've been busy today doing my work, I'm currently in the middle of teaching an IDC on Koh Lanta and come 12th June I'm participating in a half Marathon in Phuket, so my training schedule needs to be continued whenever I have time and this evening it was dry on Koh Lanta, enough to squeeze out an 8km run! I'm a bit surprised by the amount of visits to my blog and also by the amount of emails and messages I received regarding the flooding so please be assured, I will answer all messages, mails and posts and will start in a few moments.

One for the Dutch amongst my readers, Rik of Riks Restaurant in Bang Rak was on the NOS radio with a live update

Some people donated again, much appreciated Oliver, Jeanette and Sari but two people said they found it hard to find the button, it's now on top of the page, left hand side.

Take care out there and I wish everyone affected in Southern Thailand by these floods very dry days to come soon!

How To Get To SM City North EDSA From Greenhills

Here's the best way to take to get to SM City North EDSA from Greenhills both by driving and commuting. You only need one jeepney ride and one bus ride to get to SM North from Greenhills.

By Car

The short cut and the best route to get to SM North from Greenhills is to take Ortigas Avenue. Take the lane going towards LRT-2 which is in Gilmore. So it's the reverse of going towards MRT-3 which is in EDSA. You drive away from EDSA.

Stay to the middle of Ortigas Avenue and cross intersections of Roosevelt, Madison and Santolan Road. After you cross Santolan Road, street name changes to Granada. Ortigas Avenue ends up in Santolan Road.

Drive on Granada and after crossing few small streets and a bridge, you will get to see a main road intersecting Granada where from the distance a tall building is visible standing at the right corner. This road is N. Domingo Street. Granada ends up in N. Domingo and its opposite road is Gilmore. Don't cross N. Domingo and don't pass through Gilmore because Gilmore is one way from the opposite end which is in E. Rodriguez and the traffic goes towards Granada.

Turn right onto N. Domingo Street. The road that serves as the opposite lane of Gilmore going to E. Rodriguez is Dona M. Hemady, which is next to Gilmore, to the left of N. Domingo. Turn left on Dona M. Hemady Street, cross Aurora Boulevard where LRT-2 elevated track passes through and drive all the way to E. Rodriguez Sr Avenue, the busy street where public jeepneys that ply Cubao-Quiapo route pass through.

Upon approach to E. Rodriguez, you must change lane to the right because a lot of vehicles on your lane would turn left. Turn right onto E. Rodriguez Sr Avenue. At this point, your next turn to the left would be Tomas Morato Avenue.

Tomas Morato doesn't intersect or cross E. Rodriguez. It only begins to the left of E. Rodrigues. That means Tomas Morato Avenue is perpendicular to E. Rodriguez. And the distance from the corner of Dona M. Hemady and E. Rodriguez up to the corner of Tomas Morato and E. Rodriguez is approximately 143 meters only.

So, after about 80 meters, you can change your lane to the left in preparation for the left turn to Tomas Morato. Upon approach to this junction, you will immediately see the traffic lights from the distance.

Turn left on Tomas Morato and drive all the way up to the opposite end which is perpendicular to Eugenio Lopez Avenue. Before you get to Eugenio Lopez, you will cross intersection of Kamuning and other small roads before you reach the rotonda of Boy Scout Circle. Pass through the Boy Scout Circle, then turn right back to Tomas Morato, drive on and after crossing small intersections of Scout Madrinan, Scout Borromeo and Scout Bayoran, turn left on Eugenio Lopez where ABS CBN Headquarters is located to your right.

Driving on E. Lopez, you will pass by Pinoy Big Brother House to your left before you get to the next junction where you must turn right onto the next street of Mother Ignacia Avenue. From Mother Ignacia, turn left on the next street which is Sgt Esguerra Avenue. In Sgt. Esguerra, cross the next intersection of Panay Avenue, then turn right onto Quezon Avenue.

In Quezon Avenue, next intersection is EDSA. As you can see, this is a crossing of two main thoroughfares of Metro Manila. So expect traffic here especially where EDSA and Quezon Avenue meet. Turn right onto EDSA and immediately turn left on the first U-Turn slot next to Quezon Avenue, just beneath the EDSA-Quezon Avenue flyover. Complete the U-Turn to get back to EDSA, this time on north lane. Cross Quezon Avenue intersection, stay on EDSA and drive all the way up to North Avenue where Trinoma is situated at the corner of EDSA and North. Turn right onto North Avenue but immediately change lane to the left and turn left on the next left turn going to SM City North EDSA. Follow direction to the Car Park building or to the open parking located to the opposite end of the road.

By Bus/Jeepney

From Greenhills Shopping Center, go the opposite side of Ortigas Avenue via pedestrian overpass. Ride a jeepney with "Robinson Galleria EDSA" sign or take the aircon G-Liner bus bound for Taytay. Both jeepney and bus will cross EDSA. Alight after the they cross EDSA and stop at the unloading area in Robinson's Galleria. Walk towards the bus bay or loading area along EDSA near corner Ortigas in front of Robinson's Galleria entrance.

Ride a bus with any of these signs: "Monumento", "Malanday" and "Novaliches"
Tip: Look for bus with additional information written at their sign that read "Cubao Ilalim". If you ride a bus with "Cubao Ibabaw" wording on its sign, you spend longer time on the bus as it will stand longer in Cubao to fill the bus with more passengers. Besides, traffic there is so heavy you might get irritated. So take Ilalim (e.g. Monumento Cubao Ilalim).

The bus will take approximately 8 kilometers distance to SM North EDSA where it will stop by SM North EDSA Bus Bay.

By MRT

Alternatively, you can take MRT. Walk your way to Ortigas Station of MRT-3, ride a North bound train and alight at the last station of North Avenue. Enter Trinoma Mall and follow direction to the other door and from there use the footbridge that connects Trinoma to SM North EDSA.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 31st March, 2011

Today's weather;

Samui at last woke up with electricity still running (at least near my house where electricity was cut off over for almost 56 hrs), no rain pouring down, the airport open and the ferries running again. It's still cloudy and roads are flooded and some bits and pieces of rain may come down but it looks like the worst is over. Current temp at 7am is 24C and 'only' 95mm of rain came down over the last 24 hrs.
I'm starting to relax!

On Koh Tao the evacuation of stranded tourists that started yesterday will continue today with thanks to the Royal Thai Navy. 3 seriously ill people from Koh Phangan hospital were evacuated by helicopter.

Yesterday saw still lots of rain but the airport opened up and the ferries started running again and electricity came back on again. Max temp reached only 23.9C

I'm receiving many emails and messages on my blog and I will try to answer them all but it will be later today. Everybody planning a holiday around 8th April or later, you should be fine although the cleaning up activities may still be in process.

Don't forget to hit the donations buttons, with over 5000 visits per day currently, somebody out there must think that this blog is useful, show your appreciation by hitting my beer money or donation buttons here! Thanks!

Koh Lanta is having a light cloud cover, it looks like the dark clouds have moved on. Hopefully there will be some sunshine today! Current temp at 7am is 24C

Yesterday saw an almost complete dry day with mini bursts of sunshine occasionally. Max temp reached 30C

The landslide in Krabi was not as devastating as initially mentioned, only one instead of 7 villages were affected and despite 10 bodies being recovered, only around a 100 people are missing and not 1000. However, landslides are now reported in 4 provinces, including Phuket.

The situation on Koh Tao, March 2011

The situation on Koh Tao, March 2011

During the last couple of days I received a lot of questions regarding the situation on Koh Tao and it seems that they have been hit even harder than Koh Samui.

The torrential rains have done some serious structural damage and since the island was not reachable by ferries over the last 4 days, food and drinking water supplies were starting to run low.

Today the Royal Thai Navy's HTMS Chakri Naruebet an Offshore Patrol Helicopter Carrier has arrived at Koh Tao and started evacuating people off the island.

Here are some pictures from Koh Tao, partly from the Koh Tao Zone site;

Samui update, more pictures

Samui update, more pictures

The situation is slowly improving. Samui airport has opened today and apparently the first 2.000 people have been able to leave.
My house in Plai Laem has since 21.30 electricity again and the Dutch Government has given a negative travel advise to Southern Thailand. Really????

The rain is about to stop soon though and has decreased in amount and power, like the wind.

Thanks to Fatih Volkan for another donation. Cool, much appreciated!

Very bad news comes from Krabi from the Phuketwan; A LANDSLIDE on a Krabi hillside has reportedly buried eight villages, with ''up to 1000 people'' said to be missing. Krabi is popular with tourists at this time of the year.

First reports said the landslide occurred at Khao Phanom, between Krabi Town and Surat Thani. The province, noted for Phi Phi and close to James Bond island in neighboring Phi Phi, sits on Thailand's Andaman coast.

The first 10 bodies have been recovered.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 30th March, 2011

Today's weather;

Samui is dry for the time being, this morning but the wind is still very strong. The rain is supposed to subside slowly and by tomorrow the wind should have subsided as well so hopefully the airport can open either today or tomorrow. Current temp at 7am is 23.5C

Last night saw rain again and over the last 24 hrs 'only' 197mm of rain came down on the already battered island! Plai Laem and Bang Rak are closing in on 26 hrs of no electricity! Strangely enough the phone landline to our house works! Max temp reached 25C

Thanks for all the support and special shouts go out to Aaron and Robin for the donations!! I will get it to good use! Also thanks to all who are hitting the beer buttons!

Yesterday saw a very wet day on Lanta with rain almost all day but not very hard rain. Only 12mm over 24 hrs. Max temp reached 26.2C

Hotel bookings and reviews on Koh Samui for 2011

Once Samui has cleaned up the debris from the current storm that raged over the island, it's time to start thinking of your next booking on our lovely island!

Besides this Samui info and weather blog, I also have a blog with Samui hotel recommendations that I update twice per month. Right now over 70 hotels are listed and the good thing about the reviews is that I either visited these hotels myself because family or friends stayed there, so I actually have a personal view on the hotels with often some interesting inside information that you won't be able to find on a booking site!

Save big with HotelsCombined.com

One of these sites is the 'Hotels Combined' site, as pictured above which compares various hotels on various booking sites, very useful to get a good deal.

The other site is the well known and trusted Agoda site

Maybe it's a good idea to bookmark my blog and use it once you plan on booking your hotel on Koh Samui or somewhere else around Thailand.

Samui update, can things get much worse?

Samui update, can things get much worse?

A good question, the airport is still closed, a plane took off from Bangkok but aborted the landing on Samui and turned around to Bangkok again. The ferries did also not run today!

The results of a couple of days being battered by rain are being shown in the next pictures;

This big rock was the overhang rock on the road between Chaweng and Lamai near 'The Cliff' restaurant. A landslide took care of this. There were already plans to dynamite the rock overhang, well, nature took care of that, now the question is 'what's next'? Shove it int he ocean? Blow it to pieces?

Road damage in Nathon, as it looks lie, next to the pier in Nathon.

The monkey road in Bophud (photo by Thea Sonnekus)

Centara in Chaweng, beach road, where it always hits the jackpot, near Zico's! About 1 meter, all natural waterways are being blocked by Centara's walls!

It's sad to see what happened to Samui the last couple of days but unfortunately a lot of the problems could have been prevented if not all beach road property had been build block solid with walls, preventing the natural way from finding it's way to the ocean.

I do hope that the mayor is able and capable of dealing with this situation and can come up with some ideas to prevent unnecessary flooding.

The rain was out of season and extreme, so not all is controllable, but at least work on the well known problem areas!
The general consensus is that the current floods are worse than last November and even worse than 2005, when as a result of the bad floods, a good drainage system was installed.

To all my readers, during the the last November floods, my page views sky rocketed, if just all of you that ask for advice or visit my blog, book their hotel rooms through my Samui hotel recommendation or my Thailand hotel recommendation blogs, I will be a very happy camper!

I do appreciate the visits that get me some beer money, they are still few though in comparison to the amount of visitors that come and have a look at Samui in distress!

Keep posted, more updates are likely to come. Hopefully the predictions will come through and come the weekend, the sun will be out again!

I just wonder how long it will take to clean up all the mess that nature has created, a bit more than a week this time around I'm afraid!

How To Get To Intramuros Via MRT

Intramuros is situated approximately 6 kilometers from the MRT-3. To get to Intramuros via MRT, you need to take another train via LRT-1 with its nearest station, Central Terminal, located approximately half kilometer from Intramuros. Alight at Central Terminal Station and walk the 500-meter distance Intramuros gate. If you're not fond of walking, there's another route where you only need to walk a little bit. You'll get to know it towards the end of this post.

From your location, ride an MRT train bound for Taft. After getting off the train at Taft Avenue Station, take the exit to the right of the station. Avoid entering Metropoint Mall which is connected to the station. Instead, walk towards the footbridge that connects MRT-3 Taft Station to LRT-1 EDSA Station. From the turnstile (exit machine where you insert train ticket) of Taft Station, just go to the left of the only elevator at that part of the station. To the right of the elevator is Metropoint Mall's entrance.

At the end of the footbridge is EDSA Station of LRT-1, buy your train ticket and tell the seller your going to Central Station. Ride the train bound for Monumento/Roosevelt and alight at Central Terminal. You need to be reminded that there are times, drivers of LRT trains don't announce train's arrival to a station, so if you're not used to traveling by MRT and LRT, you might go beyond your destination. To help you with this, just remember Central Terminal is the eight station from EDSA, with Libertad Station being the second, followed respectively by Gil Puyat, Vito Cruz, Quirino, Pedro Gil and U.N. Avenue Station. Next to U.N. Station is the Central Terminal Station.

From Central Station, walk southward or towards Manila City Hall along the road underneath LRT elevated tracks. That road is Villegas Road. You can easily see Manila City Hall because its clock tower is very visible from the distance. Once you got to Manila City Hall, you can immediately see SM City Manila to your left. Turn right on the road that intersects Villegas and the road that borders Manila City Hall to the north. That road is Natividad Almeda-Lopez. Walk towards Padre Burgos Avenue, the main road and a wide one where passenger jeepneys bound for different locations such as Quiapo, Cubao, Divisoria, Monumento, Sta Cruz, Blumentritt, etc., pass through. You need to get to the other side of Padre Burgos and walk further along Victoria Street, the road opposite Natividad Almeda-Lopez. Don't walk across Padre Burgos to avoid MMDA (traffic enforcers) apprehension. Use pedestrian underpass which is located along Padre Burgos few meters from the corner of Natividad Lopez along the edge of Manila City Hall building.

Once you get to the corner of Victoria and Padre Burgos, just walk towards the other end of Victoria until you get to Victoria Entrance of Intramuros. For your guide, see the map for Walking Direction To Intramuros From LRT-1 Central Terminal Station. Click here

Alternatively, you can get to Intramuros without walking that far. You only need to walk around 90 meters to a gate of Intramuros from a drop-off or unloading zone of jeepneys. This route involves a 5.7 kilometers jeepney ride.

Here's the route.

Riding an LRT-1 train from EDSA Station, alight at Libertad Station, next station to EDSA.

Walk towards the corner of Taft Avenue and Libertad Street where a Philtrust Bank is located. Libertad is now known as Arnaiz Avenue, though Libertad is still being used.

Along Libertad Street aka Arnaiz Avenue near corner Taft, wait for a jeepney with "Pier Harrison Plaza Luna" sign in front of it. Don't ride jeepney with "Harrison Plaza" sign only. There must be "Pier" word at the sign.

Ride one of these jeepneys, and ask the driver to drop you off at "Round Table", a popular landmark way back then that I never known existed. I just notice all passengers going to that area say to drivers "Round Table". The funny thing is "Round Table" location don't have any sign of round but a clear triangular junction where jeepneys pass through. You will get off exactly at one of the corner of that triangular junction. So, you might wonder, "This is not a round table, this is a triangular table". LOL. Anyway, they really call that "Round Table". Try it, ask the driver to drop you off at "Round Table" and you will definitely find yourself standing at triangular road network. See the map below.

Maybe, we can ask our fellow readers for their input or opinion on how come this area is called "Round Table" when there's no sign of round area but a triangular open space inside a triangle. If you know the answer, let us know. Click here

From the unloading area at "Round Table", you can now easily see the historic wall of Intramuros, just a short walk away.

More updates about floods and drought in Thailand, March 2011

More updates about floods and drought in Thailand, March 2011

The Bangkok Post has a very good graphic displayed below that shows the affected areas that have severe flood and severe drought. All in one country. For good measure, some earth quack affected provinces are thrown in as well.

Ever considered this; A crocodile is captured by zoo workers yesterday at Suan Somdej Phra Sri Nakharin Park, where Nakhon Si Thammarat municipality’s zoo is located. It was one of 11 crocodiles that escaped the flooded zoo. Zoo staff shot dead one crocodile and caught three others. Seven remain at large. Two bears also escaped. NUCHAREE RAKRUN

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 29th March, 2011

Today's weather;

Samui is waking up under very dark clouds and is about to assess last nights torrential rain damage. Just over 400mm came down over the last 24 hours and 90mm between 1 and 4am. There will be damage to roads and buildings, I just hope it all will be within limits and reason.
Current temp at 7am is still 25C

The tendency is that all long term residents have never experienced anything like the current floods, even the November 2010 floodings were not as bad as the current situation.
The water levels in front of our house on the road between Plai Laem and Choengmon have never been as high as they are now. A lot of problems are caused because the water is 'boxed' in and can't follow it's natural flow to the ocean because of too much construction blocking the way to the ocean.

There are power cuts all over the island, so land phone lines won't work and the batteries on mobile phones will be getting very low soon or are dead already. The power cuts are either genuinely because of over load and are partly on purpose in order to avoid electrocutions. The spaghetti wire above the roads doesn't really look too re-assuring.
Max temp yesterday didn't get any higher than 26.5C

The current prediction is about another 80mm of rain for Samui and surrounding islands until 7pm today and than it's supposed to ease off with sun and no waves and wind starting from Friday onwards.

Good luck to everybody on Samui, hope it will be all good again very soon!

The situation on Koh Phangang and Koh Tao is not looking good, especially Koh Tao seems to have had some serious battering with plenty of structural damage and they must be running low on food and especially drinking water by now. I don't expect the airport to open today, due to wind and rain.

The overall situation in the South of Thailand is very bad, see the chart below. The current death toll is nine. The Nation resports; Flood waters are now wreaking havoc in the provinces of Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Trang, Krabi and Phatthalung.
To date, 13 districts of Surat Thani have been declared disaster zones, with the inundation having damaged four bridges, 11 roads and two temples.

Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat said the flooding had damaged 613 schools in Trang, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Songkhla and Phatthalung.

Bangkok Airways cancelled all 36 domestic and international flights in and out of Samui yesterday, due to the severe thunderstorms hitting the island and the surrounding area. It said affected passengers should contact its ticketing office to rebook their flights at no additional charge.

Meanwhile, just as the floods have been raging in the South, PM's Office Minister Satit Wongnongtaey said 47 other provinces were suffering from drought.

Chaweng ring road

Koh Lanta's sky is also dark and grey but the amount of rainfall here is just a fraction of what came down in other parts of Thailand. Current temp at 7am is 25.5C an yesterday's max temp reached 27.6C.

Yesterday saw some heavy rain but nothing serious. 'Just' 45mm of rain in 24 hours. All dive boats were cancelled yesterday though and I'm not sure if the dive boats will run today. As far as I know the car ferries are still running.

A next updated is not expected before noon since I'm conducting and IDC on Lanta and won't have time to be online that much.

Keep hitting the right buttons though to upgrade my beer allowance and if you plan on booking hotels on Samui or around Thailand, please use the links provided, all bookings through these sites will help me make more beer money!

Karon Beach Hotels

Karon Beach is normally thought of as the second most touristy beach in Phuket after Patong. Probably true, but it's way quieter than Patong, much cleaner, and if you drive from Patong to Karon you will see what I mean. Like a breath of fresh air, with flowers, trees, a beach that has no direct development except for the new Centara Grand at one end, and just over 3km away the Karon Beach Resort right at the other end. The rest of the beach is natural - sand, some greenery, trees, and there is a drainage canal running along part of the beach, but it's been built to look nice, you have benches to sit on, plenty of beach access and a golden dragon statue too!

Check Agoda for a full list of Karon beach hotels.

Karon has 2 main centers, the most developed near the north end with the road heading inland from the circle to the temple. I have written about Karon Beach on the blog already where you can find more general information. The north end can be quite busy. Lots of hotels and smaller guesthouses and lots of restaurants too. Past the circle further north are a few hotels - Phuket Ocean, Ramada, Centara Grand and then just off the beach are Centara Villas and Karon View which are on the hillside with a great view along the whole beach.

Then along the beach road (a small road runs all along from the circle to the south) you have resorts, some smaller, some larger, such as South Sea, Karon Princess, Hilton, Thavorn, Moevenpick, Old Phuket, Karon Sea Sand and more. Each resort has its property and each one keeps itself clean. Only pity is that during this current high season, the powers that be have been digging up the beach road! As you get to the south end, a road heads inland (I work up there at Sunrise Divers), and up that road is Phuket Orchid plus many smaller hotels like Karon Place, Casa Brasil, and some lower budget guesthouses like the Pineapple. Karon has accommodation to suit every budget. The last hotels to the south end are Andaman Seaview, Phuket Island View, Horizon and then Karon Beach Resort and Marina Phuket. If you stay near the south end, you can also walk to Kata Beach in about 10 - 15 minutes

Recommended Karon Beach Hotels

Pacific Club Resort

Pacific Club Resort Karon

The Pacific Club Resort is at the north end of Karon, not right by the beach but on a hillside up a small road, great views, peace and quiet, a 10 minute walk into the busy end of Karon. This hotel consistently gets good reviews, and is in my Top 10 Phuket Hotels list.

Phuket Orchid Resort

Phuket Orchid Resort Karon

Phuket Orchid is quite a big hotel with over 500 rooms, the entrance is 1 minute walk to Karon beach. Great for families with several large swimming pools. It's on the side road heading off the beach - walk up that road for restaurants and bars and Sunrise Divers, where you can find me :) A friend of mine was manager of this resort for a while - he still works for the same company currently managing a resort in Samui.

Marina Phuket Resort

Marina Phuket Resort

The Marina Phuket Resort sits on the headland right at the south end of Karon Beach. The main entrance is up the road a little from the beach, but some of the rooms ahve a fantastic seaview and they have a restaurant called On The Rock which sits above the beach. Always gets good reviews, and close to Kata and Karon beaches.

Old Phuket Hotel

Old Phuket Hotel

The Old Phuket is tucked away up a side road near the middle of Karon beach - the side road is for hotel access only, not a through road, so it's very quiet and just a couple of minutes walk to the beach. Hotel is designed in "olde Phuket" style - if you want to see the real thing, take a tour of Phuket Town!

Boomerang Village

Boomerang Village

Boomerang Village - a bit of an oddity, not by the beach, I guess at least 10 minutes walk, it's up on the hillside between Karon and Kata off the "back road" called Patak Road (good for finding small local restaurants!). It gets great reviews, always sits in the top 10 on TripAdvisor,

Situation on Samui worsening, airport closed

Situation on Samui worsening, airport closed

The rain has been relentless today and by 4pm the airport was officially closed, this is on BKK Airways Facebook page, funnily enough nothing is listed on their website;

All flights to/from Samui are cancelled due to bad weather. Passengers can contact 02 270 6699, 1771 or 077 422 512-9 (Samui Office) for rebooking the flight. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Lines of people at Samui airport today

Maenam area today

Chaweng today

The situation on Koh Phangan is not that great, see picture above and on Koh Tao long term residents report about flooding as worse as they have ever seen and they're slowly running out of food and drinking water.

The worst for Samui is still coming with a predicted 260mm of rain tomorrow. Wind Guru is predicting more rain tomorrow with a lot less wind but by Thursday things should have calmed down again.

If you find my blog and updates useful, don't feel embarrassed by donating some beer money! Plenty of buttons do the trick here and if you want to book your hotels on Samui or in Thailand, please use the links provided. It all helps to keep this blog going!
