1st May, 2010

Today's weather;

It's cloudy but expecting a bit of rain may be stretching it a bit, although towards the end of April there were two days with rain on Samui. Current temp at 7am is 28C.

Sure enough it starts to rain just before 8am!! Nice and cool!

Yesterday saw once more a very hot day 'battering' Samui. There was some breeze in the afternoon though which was nice and max temp reached 32.4C

Goodbye to April 2010

Goodbye to April 2010

It's that time of the month again and April is about to change into May.

This years April was spot on as you can expect during April on Samui. Hot and hardly any rain at all.

This in contrast with the 2007 version which saw rain over Songkran or the 2008 version that saw some torrential rain storms or 2009 that started out wet.

Blog wise it was a rather quiet month although I had some nice pix of this years Songkran.

I had a PADI IDC on and just got back from Koh Tao yesterday from the PADI IE. The Instructor Specialties were already out of the way.

Let's move on to May 2010 and see what that month will bring, we can only hope that the whole Bangkok situation will be diffused soon.

My favourite places: The Beach Bar

Phuket can be whatever you want it to be. Phuket is bars and girls. Phuket is crowded beaches and jet skis; shopping and good food. Phuket is groovy nightlife with trendy people. Phuket is a luxury getaway at a 5 star resort. Phuket is an island full of history and interesting culture. Phuket does have all this and more. Me? I am not into nightlife, clubs, bargirls and not rich enough to pamper myself at a fancy resort. Don't need a hotel anyway. Phuket is home. Phuket is where I work, where my kids go to school, and when I have time off work, I try to explore, which is what this blog is mostly about really. You can look other places for nightlife information, and if you want full on tourism, watersports and more food than you can eat, stay in Patong Beach, by all means, but do try to get out and explore some!

This blog is "my" Phuket (not actually mine, but you get the idea) and I give thanks to all readers and people who email or come to see me to say they've enjoyed the blog. If you can find some useful information here among all the "normal" tourism websites, great. Hope you may get some ideas of things to do - things that may otherwise have been unknown. The blog has been going for 4 years now, and there's plenty more to be added. More restaurants I want to try, more trips to take just off Phuket to small islands or attractions in nearby areas. Always new things to see - and at the same time, there are some places I/we (the family) keep going back to. Some days, especially in high season, a day off is very welcome, and all I want to do is relax. We have some favourite places to go, and The Beach Bar is maybe top of the list.

The Beach Bar

Sunset near The Beach Bar

The Beach Bar is a small, cheap, friendly, rather basic restaurant right by the beach at Cape Panwa, overlooking Chalong Bay. It's just along the beach from the Novotel Panwa resort, which sounds developed but you can't even see the hotel from the restaurant. There are some holiday apartments a bit further along called By The Sea. Many of the customers come from these 2 places, which helps explain why The Beach Bar closes during low season. It's normally open from about October to the end of April. Open for lunch or dinner, great for sunsets like the one above.

It's a family run restaurant, don't expect white suited waiters and silver platters here. We like the simplicity. We found the place over 3 years ago and now we always enjoy a chat with the owners and have seen their kids growing up, as they have seen ours. The kids get on great. My wife and I like that - we can sit quietly while the kids go off and play on the beach, looking for shells or hunting crabs. I like to go in the late afternoon. By around 4:30pm they take all the tables out onto the sand, so you can sit right by the sea and wait for sunset.

Tables on the sand at The Beach Bar

Kids love it there, they are more or less free to roam, and it's safe. There is no road, no jet skis, no big crowds. If we're sitting out on the sand we can keep an eye on them if they wander along the beach. This year we did our son's birthday party there, which he and all the kids loved.

Our son at The Beach Bar

What? Oh, go on then, here are some more sunset views from The Beach Bar...

17th April 2010

(above) Sunset 17th April 2010

15th November 2008

(above) Sunset 15th November 2008

The beach itself is not perfect - pretty good for swimming at high tide, but totally rocky at low tide. Still pretty views, as you can see from the sunset pictures, but you can only swim at high tide, when things look more like this - much more like it!

View along the beach at high tide

The food at The Beach Bar is quite simple. They do seafood - lobster, crab, fish, prawns, it's maybe a bit cheaper than the main beach areas. We often just get "normal" Thai food. They do good Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Tom Yum, Glass Noodle Salad, and one of my favourites - Chicken wrapped in Pandan leaf ("Gai Hor Bai Toey"). Most of the easy dishes are only 60 - 80 Baht.

Yam Woonsen (glass noodle salad)

Prawns with cashew nuts

Last year we also went there for Loy Krathong, as we'd had enough of heading to the more crowded places and having to push our way through to the water. At The Beach Bar it was just us and a few other people plus the owners family launching our Krathongs into the water for good luck. I reckon we'll go there again this year (it will be November 21st).

But what I really enjoy is the relaxed atmosphere, no rush, no noise, it's a place that I can feel totally at ease for a few hours, watching the sun set, watching our kids play and drink a few cold beers. Yes, one of our favourite places. And.. if you're planning to go in the near future - please note, it closes for low season sometime in May. Opens again sometime in October.

More restaurants we like in Phuket

Today's weather;

Coming from a lightly cloud covered Koh Tao, which protects us from a steaming heat. Current temp at 7am is 28C

Yesterday saw lots of overcast on Koh Tao and rain on Samui! Around 8pm last night there was a power cut on Koh Tao which lasted until 11pm, except for places that have their own generators.
Max temp reached 32.8C

The Sky Lounge Of Grand Paragon Hotel, Johor Bahru

The Sky Lounge is situated on 26th Floor of Grand Paragon Hotel, Century Garden - Johor Bahru. The company I attached with was held the Annual Dinner in the lounge on January 2010. That gave me a chance to explore the Highest Lounge in Johor Bahru for the moment!

The entrance of Sky Lounge, Grand Paragon Hotel

The dinner started about 7pm on that day, before that...some of my colleagues already enjoy their ice cold beer in the lounge. Alcohol is serve mostly for the local or foreign company when they celebrates their Annual Dinner. Even the Wine and Liquor were serve in the house, but I'm only enjoyed the Tiger Cold Beer...:)

The beer serve in 'Tower', during the 'Happy Hour', the charges is MYR108.00 and MYR128 after 'Happy Hour'.

And the foods served on that night was pretty delicious, they had Local food, Japanese food and International food...

The foods for the night :-

The local food and fruits

I Love the Japan Sashimi on the left!

I had this Roast Lamb a lot! My favorite! :)

There were Only 3 Lovely Ladies (waitress) serve the party in such a big Lounge on the Top of the Hotel...They did it well!

The Lovely waitress of Sky Lounge

Beside the foods and drinks, there was a Nice Red Piano display on the left of the stage. The performer play some nice song during the performance...

The RED Piano in the lounge

Another advantage of the lounge is...you can take the Johor Bahru city photo from the open air balcony! Because of the height of the Hotel, the vision is from Johor bahru City till Singapore. That was nice! I will share in my next post.

As usual, our colleagues and guests arrived about 8pm. Everyone were enjoy their food very much! Following with performer on the stage and lastly...the lucky draw. The First price was a 32" Sharp LCD TV! But I didn't get it...:)

I was attracted by the lighting in the lounge while others were busy with their foods....

There was a Cigar Bar at the right side of the lounge, if you are cigar lover, you will definitely love the environment!

Overall, we were satisfied with the services provided and also the foods. The dinner party end about 12 midnight and left some colleagues and guests chit-chatting until 3am in the morning! (I'm one of them...)

I'll be back again, not for the alcohol but for the spectacular night view of Johor Bahru!

Grand Paragon Hotel at Century Garden, Johor Bahru

Grand Paragon Hotel 4* (N1 28.867 E103 45.700) is one of the famous hotel at Johor Bahru at the moment. It's located at the junction of Jalan Harimau and Jalan Seladang of Century Garden (Taman Abad), Johor Bahru.

We stayed here for one night on the day our company having the Annual Dinner at the Sky Lounge (26th Floor) of Grand Paragon Hotel. The room rate we had was a special discount! I only paid MYR160.00 for a room with 2 Queen bed. That was really reasonable because the published rate on their website is MYR230.00 for Standard room and MYR250.00 for Deluxe room.

The 2 Queen Bed room was spacious and so do the bathroom!

The bathroom of the room at Grand Paragon Hotel, JB.

We checked-in about 1pm, and have plenty of time to explore around the hotel area....

The main entrance. The staircase at the end is towards the Japanese Restaurant at M Floor.

The lobby area is spacious!

You will fall asleep if you relax on the sofa, because the Air-Conditional was cold...

Nice Lightning!

Japanese Restaurant at M Floor

After the Ground and M Floor, we continue to 11th Floor, the swimming pool...

The swimming pool of Grand Paragon Hotel

The swimming pool is kind of special which located outdoor and in the shape of half circle. It's not the Olympics size but it's comfort enough...

I woke up late in the next morning and I missed the breakfast! But my wife and my daughter were enjoyed the delicious breakfast very much!
Overall, we are satisfied with the 4 stars Hotel and the staffs are very friendly! It's worth to have a comfort stay at Grand Paragon Hotel, Johor Bahru.

Hotels in Phuket Town

Phuket is of course more known as a beach destination, and I would guess 99% of visitors will want to stay close to the water. There are plenty of hotel recommendations on this blog, mostly hotels near the beaches - Phuket's west coast is all about beaches, from the overdeveloped madness that is Patong (yeh, some people like it, I know) to much quieter locations like Naithon or Kamala. There are some hotels inland away from the water, or on the far less developed east coast, and there is also plenty of accommodation in Phuket Town.

Phuket Town (officially called Phuket City, but it certainly feels like a town), is the main business center of Phuket and the provincial capital. There's no beach, but staying in town gives a totally different experience of Phuket. Sure there are some tourism oriented businesses, but mostly it's local life - markets, small interesting shops, Chinese shrines, day to day life going on all around, historic buildings, museums, local restaurants and a nightlife that is quite separate to the bars 'n' girls at the beaches. It's the place to be to enjoy events such as the Phuket Vegetarian Festival or the Street Show Festival. I like Phuket Town, and there's plenty of space given to it on the blog. If you have a longer stay in Phuket and want to experience more than just tourism, why not stay in town for a couple of nights?

Some Recommended Phuket Town Hotels

Thavorn Grand Plaza Hotel

A couple of blocks south of the bus terminal, about a 10 minute walk to the old town, the Thavorn is quite large (150 rooms), it's right opposite one of our favourite restaurants in town, Uptown Noodles. I see room rates under 500 Baht a night at the moment. It even has dorm rooms.

Thavorn Grand Plaza Hotel - Rates and Reservations

Bhukitta Hotel

Right next to the bus terminal, 5 minutes walk to old town, lots of local restaurants close by. Reading the reviews, you can see some common "problems" with hotels in town - things like "too far from the beach" - well, duh! And no nice views - well it's in the town, and maybe staff not speaking the best English, yeh, if they did, they'd work in a 5 star resort.

Chinotel

Newly opened in 2010, Chinotel is on Ranong Road right next to the new market. Rates only 600 - 800 Baht per night with aircon, TV and you're right in the old town.

Royal Phuket City Hotel

Just about opposite the bus terminal, the Royal Phuket City is more of a business/conference hotel, with 250 rooms, a nice cafe called Cafe 154 that we used as a base for last years Phuket Photo Walk. Has a pool and spa too. Another favourite restaurant, Kaewjai, is just a block away.

Sino House Hotel

A couple of blocks North and East of old town, Sino House is an apartment style hotel and includes the highly recommended Rain Tree Spa which my wife and I mean to visit one day soon!

Lub Sbuy Guesthouse

A budget place, again very close to the bus terminal with lots of local places to eat nearby and 5 minutes walk to the old town. Odd spelling, Lub Sbuy means "peaceful sleep".. guess I would spell it Lap Sabai, but each to their own!

Lub Sbuy Guesthouse - Rates and Reservations

Dara Hotel

A real oddity, this place. Location - on the edge of town close to the Central Festival Mall. I'd only stay here if I had some transport, but it's kind of unique - very colourful and modern.

Phuket Town may not be your cup of tea, but this blog does tend to be read by people who like all kinds of tea! Aside from the hotels above, Phuket Town has lots of low budget guesthouses and backpacker places - more info here: Cheap Places To Stay in Phuket.

Yesterday was hot once more, however around 11am there was some rain, although nothing to get too excited about but also better than no rain at all. Max temp reached 32C
Occasionally massive cloud cover is over parts of Samui but they never seem to let loose of their heavy water weight.

The Picnic Basket up for sale, an end to an era?

The Picnic Basket up for sale, an end to an era?

It's just over a year ago that I wrote about the Picnic Basket changing location in Bang Rak.

After 9 years in business, Paul has had enough of being in the shop 7 days a week, from early in the morning starting to shop and finishing early in the evening. A combination of working too much and not enjoying the work any more made him decide about 5 weeks ago to call it a day and put his Picnic Basket up for sale.

After having seen the place closed for a couple of weeks now, nobody really seemed to know why it was closed and today I was teaching an EFRI course in classroom of the Hyperbaric Chamber next door to the Picnic Basket when in the morning I took a picture of the poster that's been put up, with the details for the sale on it.
Later today, I saw Paul sitting inside and had a chat with him. He's having a better feeling about the whole situation now, having taken a step back since 5 weeks. So, if anybody has a spare 3 million Baht floating around, call Paul and get involved with an excellent restaurant in Bang Rak with a nice turn over and a steady clientele!

On a similar token, the Mango Russian restaurant in Chaweng, has been closed down since a while.

TKK Seafood Restaurant (2nd visit) at Teluk Jawa, Johor Bahru.

Our last visit was almost 3 years ago, you can read it from here : TKK Seafood Restaurant at Teluk Jawa (N1 28.606 E103 50.728). So we decided to go back again...

The TKK Seafood Restaurant was not so crowded during our visit on the Saturday night. This time we found a table at the outdoor area where good atmosphere and cool sea breeze...beside that, we enjoyed the night view of Johor Straits...

The waitress was responsive and took our food order in less than five minutes. My wife did the order and the foods are served in 10 minutes...everything was so Express!

Our order:-
1)  Vegetables
2)  Salted Egg Crabs
3)  Claypot Drunken Prawn
4)  Hotplate Tou-Fu
5)  Sweet Sour Squids

Vegetables

Salted Egg Crabs

Claypot Drunken Prawn

Hotplate Tou-Fu

Sweet Sour Squids

All the seafood were just average...it was different from the last time we visited this restaurant! Maybe the Chefs are different.
The total damage was MYR140.00 for 4 adults and 1 child (included drinks). The price was reasonable especially with the good environment of the restaurant.

A total of 361 people were killed and another 3,802 injured in road accidents over the seven days of Songkran. This gives an average of just over 51 deaths per day. Now it's back to the daily grinder! If I remember correctly, Thailand has about 30 road death per day.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (青云亭) and Kling Mosque at Malacca

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (N2 11.850 E102 14.814) And Kling Mosque (N2 11.806 E102 14.848) are located at the Goldsmith Street (Jalan Tukang Emas aka Jalan Tokong) of Malacca town.

These are the First Place Of Worship for the two religious in Malaysia, and of course they are the oldest too! You can read more about their histories below...

History of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple :
"Built in 1645 by Kapitan Lee Wei King with building materials imported from China, Cheng Hoon Teng served as the main place of worship for the local Hoklo (Hokkien) community. The main hall was built by Kapitan Chan Ki Lock in 1704 and was rebuilt in 1801 by Kapitan China Chua Su Cheong, who contributed to the aesthetic and magnificent structural additions of the building.
In 1962, then abbot Seck Kim Seng ordained Houn Jiyu-Kennett, a Zen nun from England and the future founder of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, at this temple.
In 2003, Cheng Hoon Teng was awarded a UNESCO award for outstanding architectural restoration." Source from Wiki.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple at Malacca

"The richly decorated Cheng Hoon Teng temple covers an area of 4,600 m2.
Featuring a magnificent main gate along Jalan Tokong, the Cheng Hoon Teng temple consists of a complex of several prayer halls, with a large main prayer hall dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kuan Yin. Additional smaller prayer quarters were added later. One of these is dedicated to the Taoist gods of wealth, longevity and propagation, while another houses ancestral tablets." Source from Wiki.

Entrance to Main prayer hall

The building was built without a single 'nail' or 'screw'. That's one of the masterpiece! There are many tourist visit this temple everyday, sometimes it can be really crowded...

Below are some photos of the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple...

The roof decoration of the temple

Candles

Dragon on the main door is common on Chinese Temple

I spend about an hour walking around and continue visit the next place of worship - Kling Mosque. The distance between this temple and mosque is only 120 meter.

"The Masjid Kampong Kling, built in 1748, is one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia."

"A courtyard behind the mosque contains a fountain-like pool for ablutions that is raised a few steps above ground level and circumambulated by a similarly raised and covered walkway. The commanding minaret was built entirely of masonry in contrast to the accompanying timber mosque. Likened to a Chinese pagoda or stupa form, this type of minaret has become characteristic of Malacca. Renaissance embellishments include the use of engaged columns as well as the arched windows and piping that traces them. Minarets are not traditional to Malay Islamic architecture, though they have become increasingly more prevalent and are useful in demarcating the mosque in dense urban areas. In 1868 the mosque and its minaret were enclosed by a high wall to protect it from the street."

"Chinese ceramic tiles were imported to adorn the roof, the floor and the lower walls of the mosque. Furthermore, decorative motifs such as those applied to the doors and windows and ornamentation such as the curved eaves terminating in sculptural finials on the roof are attributed to an Oriental influence, as is the rooftop ornament, or mastaka. Built during the Dutch occupation that followed the period of Portuguese rule, European touches reveal themselves in the mosque in such elements as rendered plaster on the internal masonry walls." Source from here.

I found the special of this mosque was the Pagoda at the right. According to some history articles, it was due to Dutch architecture.
I was not enter the mosque because I saw many tourists looking at the mosque from outside and seems like not allow to entering the mosque. So I just snap a few photos of the building.
