Welcome to November 2010

Welcome to November 2010

The rainy season or monsoon is starting up it's engines. Last years November hardly saw any rain at all but a typical Samui November has plenty of rain and the signs are all gearing towards a very wet first November week. Big storms with heavy wind gusts and big waves are about to reach Samui's shore.

It looks like this year we need to batter down the hatches and just hope that we can quickly move into December and better weather patterns with more sunshine. Having said that, the rain brings much needed water which will fill up the wells, needed come April when it's hot and dry!
I just hope we don't get any flooding on our island as in the North and North East of Thailand like last month.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 1st November, 2010

Today's weather;

The weather forecasts got it all mixed up! Koh Lanta is having rain pretty much all night long and this morning as well. The current temp at 7am is 23.3C

Koh Samui on the other hand, where all the rain should be is almost sunny! Very strong wind and big waves but dry! Current temp is 27.2C at 7am

Yesterday saw a similar story, Lanta had actually a few sunbeams before noon but more cloud cover and around noon the rain started, more or less not to stop until late in the evening for a while. Max temp reached 29.5C
Samui was pretty much dry all day, again lots of wind and big waves though. Max temp reached 27.9C

The next two days should be stormy all over South Thailand, very strong wind gusts and big waves, all small crafts are not allowed to sail out.

Wonderland Seafood Store at Kuah Town, Langkawi Island

After we came back from the Mangrove Tour of Kilim Geoforest Park, and had a rest at the Hotel then we continue to food hunting for our dinner.
We decided to had it at Wonderland Seafood Store (N6 19.479 E99 50.633), Kuah Town of Langkawi Island. It's because the restaurant is having many good reviews from online.

The Wonderland Food Store is located along Persiaran Mutiara 2 which is a inner lane from the Jalan Padang Matsirat main road. It's also exactly opposite the Bella Vista Hotel across the stream. We missed it while we passed by because the food store was without a signage and the kitchen is facing the road, luckily we navigated back by the GPS device.

It was crowded when we stepped in. And really strange that the next seafood restaurant was Empty! So we quickly got our table and placed the order...

The order :-
1)  Baked fish
2)  Steam prawn with egg
3)  Mixed vegatables
4)  Omelette

The dishes served on our table were Super Fast! Impressed!

The Local Style Baked Fish

Steam Prawn with egg

Mixed vegetables

The Omelette

Overall the dishes served by the food store were Delicious! Especially the Baked Fish and the Steam Prawn. The sambal of the baked fish was different and tasty, the prawns were fresh! The vege and the omelette were average.
Most of the seafood restaurants in Langkawi don't serve Live Seafood, except a few at Pantai Cenang.

The Damage :  MYR43.00 for 2 adults and 1 child included a can of Tiger Beer. Wah! It was Very Reasonable!!

Rated : 4.5/5

We enjoyed the dinner very much! We will DEFINITELY Come back again!

Goodbye to October 2010

Goodbye to October 2010

It's that time of the month again! October 2010 is almost done and over with and it's a good moment to have a look back at this month.

The weather was interesting, there was some decent rain but there was also plenty of sunshine, what I would call 'a mixed bag'. This in itself is not so strange as during late October it's not unlikely for the monsoon to start. This year we thought we had a very early start since during early October we had some very wet days and it's wet again towards the end.
It looks like this was the wettest month out of the last 3 that I recorded, except maybe for 2007, 2008 and 2009 were very mild months and had nice weather to show for.

This month I participated in a 5km run, organised by Ibis Samui. There was some very strange parking techniques on display early this month. My 'Food on Wheels' series had a few more additions and this one about ice cream in a bun is remarkable.
I also posted a few things about my current stay in Koh Lanta where I'm teaching an IDC. My newly launched diving website was an exciting moment for me this month, have a look and check it out!

On a sad note, my grandmother in law passed away towards the end of this month. She turned 90 years old!

Before I sign off this month, let's a have a quick look at some other bloggers around Thailand;

Rick at Behind the Noodle curtain just moved to Bangkok and is discovering a lot of new things in his new surroundings, amongst others an intriguing post about money trees, to be found all over the country.
Martyn at Beyond the Mango Juice has a great post about the local fire water or Lao Khao.
Mr. Boonsong aka Boonie keeps producing some great posts and pictures on his blog, have a look at his blog and learn some interesting facts about Thai life style and possibly some Thai words as well.
Changwat, Amphoe, Tambon may possibly be one of the strangest blogs about Thailand but a very interesting one with information that you probably wouldn't be bale to find anywhere else. Andy does a great job in keeping us updates about administrative subdivisions of Thailand - history, current news, facts hardly found in English and he's doing this now since 3 years! Congrats Andy and keep up the good work.
He also runs the My unseen Thailand blog and he posted about a great museum; the Nonthaburi Local Museum.
My fellow weather reporter in crime can be found on Phuket and Jamie's Phuket weather blog is a must, after you read mine of course.
The Jungle Life on Koh Phangan writes about the rain that's goes hand in hand during this monsoon heavy month.
Paul Garrigan always has plenty of interesting posts to choose from but this month he wrote about his fear of the Thai educational system and how it will affect his son. Something that hits home to me as well! Excellent post!
Malcolm in Wangpo Tetsaban is still enjoying his retirement and keeps us updated from his neck of the woods. He has a good posts about how the local villagers helped and pitched in for the water flood victims in Thailand.
Talen who just moved to Pattaya goes a little bit outside of the city and writes amongst others about Wat Yansangwararam.
Lawrence in Phana is actually in the UK right now but still manages to blog about Thai related topics and he has a great post about Kathin celebrations in a Devon/UK Temple.
Mike in Prachuap Kirikhan has daily updates and one is about Mao Berry wine and juice, made in Thailand.
Steve is musing over the full name of Bangkok, check it out and be surprised!
Our local Thai pirate talks about palm tree grubs, food I dug out of our garden as well!
Last but not least, Cat at the learning center for the Thai language has amongst others a list of 39 Thai words you must know.

Well if you made it till here and you read just a few of the above mentioned posts, let alone got lost in I don't how many other posts on these blogs, you learned a lot of interesting facts about Thailand and had some great stories to read!

Looking forward to November and your visits next month!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 31st October, 2010

Today's weather;

Koh Lanta is still enjoying a dry spell, which should finish by tomorrow when all of Southern Thailand is going to be hit by a massive storm with strong wind and big waves. The Western side will have to endure this for one day but the Gulf is in for a couple of days of heavy rain. Right now there's a thin cloud layer that may well be burnt away by the sun once it heats up. Current temp at 7am is 25.5C

Samui is also still dry but is experiencing some strong and heavy wind which caused a power cut for around 3 hours during the night. It's very cloudy right now but dry and with a current temp of 25.3C at 7am.

Yesterday saw a mixed bag on Koh Lanta with sunshine, overcast and occasional bits of rain with a max temp of 30.2C.
Samui was dry but had very strong wind gusts and a max temp of 29.5C

Food on Wheels; The original pancake

Food on Wheels; The original pancake

Back to the roots and basics. This is about pancakes but the mother of all pancakes so to speak, the original.
Two months I wrote about pancakes on Koh Tao, the classic variation in my series on 'Food on Wheels'.

The pancake today is the real Muslim pancake, the guy in the picture above is everyday at the main road near 'Old Town', as reported on in the recent post about the Koh Lanta Museum, and sells his pancakes. However, there's nothing fancy about this, you can get options, with and without egg for either 10 or 15 Baht. No Nutella, no banana, no frills and thrills. The only additions he still has are the condensed milk and sugar, but I don't count them as add ons, they're part of the furniture so to speak!

The reason I went to Koh Lanta's 'Old Town' was because I needed the 4th injection in a series of 5 for rabies, after I got bitten a while ago by a dog whilst running. A picture of the hospital is coming soon.

Every day around 5pm he comes out of the woodworks and the locals gather around him and go sit in the small sala behind him to enjoy his pancake ad I assume to shoot the shit.
His hot plate is fired by wood, which is in the big white bag next to his push cart.

This is the end result of the pancake, a nice square of egg and dough (?) with all of his ingredients in front of him. Back to the basics or what? The taste was also good!

Hope you enjoyed this entry, I was pleased to be able to buy a pancake here and find the 'mother' of all pancakes carts around Thailand!

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 30th October, 2010

Today's weather;

Koh Lanta is having a seemingly thin layer of overcast which could be easily evaporated once the sun gets heating up later this morning. Current temp at 7am is around 27C

Samui has a mixed bag, some blue sky with some clouds in it, this could go anyway during the day! Current temp here is 27.2C

Yesterday saw a day of overcast on Koh Lanta but it stayed dry. Max temp reached around 28C
Samui on the other hand had plenty of rain all through the day and it wasn't until the evening that it stopped raining. Max temp reached 29.5C

Koh Lanta Museum, Old Town

Koh Lanta Museum, Old Town

On a trip to the Old Town, in the very deep Southern part of Koh Lanta, in search of the local hospital, I drove past the Old Town and decided to have a look inside and I was struck by the charm of this small village. Just for the record, one of the road sign spelled Old Town as 'Oil Town', a classic TIT!

One of the very first things that struck me and caught my attention was a house built in a style of mansions and houses in the deep South of the USA. Have a look at the picture above, to me that house yells 'The South will rise'.

To my big surprise however, it turns out to be the local museum! As described on the plaque above. Unfortunately it looked very much closed and not to be opened in the near future.

One of the few or rather only things on display is this boat, whatever it represents. This is actually what caught my eye and made me decide to stop and have a look, since it looked so scenic!

The whole house has been recently renovated and painted but it also looks that the day after it's official opening and the brass left Koh Lanta, it was closed immediately. Don't these stairs look like stairs coming straight out of a Stephen King novel or movie?

I would love to have the opportunity to visit the actual museum and will ask around a little bit if and when it may be open or maybe get somebody to open it just for me.

Stay tuned!

Today's weather;

Koh Lanta's sky is covered in clouds this morning with a current temp of 26C at 7am.

Samui on the other hand has rain since last night. Current temp at 7am is 25.3C

Sunset last evening at Klong Nin on Koh Lanta

Yesterday bot Koh Lanta had a splendid day, lots of sunshine, flat ocean and dry! There was a tiny bit of rain late during the evening. Max temp was 30.6C

Samui on the other hand started out with sunshine but during the day various parts of the island had some serious cloud formations showing up and here and there rain was falling down. During the evening rain set in pretty much all over the island. The forecast for 1st and 2nd November shows a strong storm with heaps of rain and massive wind guts and big waves. I wouldn't be surprised if ferry and plane traffic will be interrupted. Max temp reached 29.7C

Grandmother in law passed away today, RIP

Grandmother in law passed away today, RIP

At the tender age of 90 years, my grandmother in law passed away after a short stay in hospital as a result of a brain hemorrhage.

My wife grew up under her wings and is very sad at the moment. It's unfortunate that I'm in Koh Lanta right now and can't give her more moral support.

Her body will be brought over to Wat Plai Laem and the funeral ceremony will be held within the next couple of days.

A beautiful and lovely person with a very big 'Jai Dee' or good heart has passed away.

Results in the 'update outside of Samui' poll

Results in the 'update outside of Samui' poll

The original question was if you want updates during my up and coming travels outside of Koh Samui, as they have started today, whilst I find my self on Koh Lanta, just having heard on the BBC news about a potential Tsunami warning with a 7.5 Richter scale earthquake off the Sumatra coast.

In the poll there were 71 participants and the 3 questions I asked and the responses were as follow;

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN UPDATES OUTSIDE OF KOH SAMUI

YES 25 (35%)

NO 16 (22%)

COMBINE LOCAL AND SAMUI UPDATES 30 (42%)

This result means that 55 voters out of 71 are interested in updates about my travels. 30 voters or 42% like to get updates about Samui and whatever location I'm at!

I can live with the latter result, since that's what I was supporting (without voting myself) and I will try to update both locations at all times.

The result is very straightforward and strongly in favor of updates outside of Koh Samui, so that's what I will try to get going.

Thanks for taking the time to vote and I hope that the 'no' voters will still drop by!

Early Morning at Kathu Shrine

I always try to visit my "local" shrine in the morning when they are doing their street procession as part of the Phuket vegetarian festival. Kathu is (so the history books say) where the festival originated and the local community take a lot of pride in the festival and their history. I already blogged about our visit to the shrine on the 7th for the opening ceremonies of the festival. I also headed to Kathu a couple of times during the week for food, as I tried very hard to stick to the vegetarian diet for the duration of the festival. On Friday 15th the idea was to be at the shrine nice and early, but the morning looked so grey. I did not rush, got to there at about 6:30am, a bit late to watch face piercing. I had been earlier last year and had some piercing photos like this one. Last year the morning was bright and sunny.

Seemed to me that with approaching rain the participants in the procession were keen to get moving. They walk all the way from Kathu to Phuket Town, through town and end by the sea at Sapan Hin, a walk of about 8km. Barefoot. With sharp objects embedded in cheeks, or carrying statues of the emperor gods. Actually, maybe they were glad for a cooler, wetter morning. Easier walking compared to a hot sunny morning.

Spike

I had been shopping the day before and bought a 50mm f1.8 lens for my trusty Canon EOS 20D. Figured it would be good for portraits like the one above, and good in lower light. Using a fixed lens is rather odd when you are used to a zoom, the composition of the photo depends a lot more on where you stand, and varying the aperture can have a huge effect. And if you want to zoom out, walk backwards!

More?

The shot above uses f2.8, as I wanted to blur the face and accentuate the piercing on the arm. Obviously the spikes in the cheeks and lips weren't enough for this guy - give me needles in the arms too! And the photo below, one of my favourites from the day, shows I think why I wanted that new lens.

Vegetarian festival Phuket

The devotees started out of the shrine at about 7am. I had decided not to follow them to town due to the weather plus this blog is still just for fun - I have a dive shop to run! The guy below is a local policeman and a regular participant in the vegetarian festival.

He's bananas

Ma Song with axes

The Ma Song (above) swings axes outside the shrine. Some of these Ma Song really do cut themselves such as this guy at the Bang Neow shrine procession on the 13th. Some seem rather more careful to swing without cutting too much!

The procession left the shrine led by the most important Ma Song who was carried along on a vehicle. Other Ma Song were on foot. Not all cut themselves. I am not sure of the hierarchy, but I think that the most important Ma Song, the ones who really seem possessed by spirits, are the ones who do not impale themselves. They leap about, or walk bent like old men, offer prayers, and I hear them speaking in strange voices. Can be a bit spooky. A lot of attention goes to those with pierced faces, but Ma Song like the one below are fascinating to watch.

Ma Song in a trance

The way they walk, talk and move, I defy anyone to tell me it's all an act. I am sure there is something quite real happening, even if it's sometimes hidden behind the showmen - the ones who stick unusual objects in their cheeks in the hope of getting their picture in the paper! Yes, I mean you, Mr "baseball bat"!

Anyone for baseball?

The rear of the procession is the loudest. While the odd firecracker may be thrown at the feet of the Ma Song, the majority are saved for the gods and those carrying them. As the emperor god images are paraded through Kathu village, I dashed around trying to avoid deafness and too much smoke inhalation and trying to get a photo. The guys carrying the god images are prepared - wearing sports shoes rather than sandals and certainly not barefoot like the pierced devotees. Barefoot would be asking for burns! Firecrackers are thrown and hoisted above the gods on bamboo poles. The noise and smoke are something to witness.

Boom!

Firecrackers in Kathu village

As the procession left the village that was pretty much the end of the festival for me. I did attend the fire walking event at Kathu shrine on the 16th (photos here) and very very almost lasted an entire 10 days on the vegetarian diet. By the evening of Saturday 16th I was ready for a big ol' burger and it happened that a friend's restaurant (The Lunch Room) had just been renovated and does burgers and they have big TVs to watch the English football! Farewell vegetarian festival 2010. Next year the festival starts earlier (date depends on Chinese lunar calendar), about September 27th. So, only 11 months to go!

The Bat Cave at Kilim Geoforest Park of Langkawi Island

The Bat Cave (N6 24.112 E99 51.551) is located about 420m away from the Kilim Jetty. The journey only take 5 minutes from the Jetty.

"The bat cave was existed about 440-480 million years ago, and it's lurks quietly in a mangrove swamp in a tributary of Kilim River. The chamber is in the form of a long tunnel. Clinging precariously on the ceiling of hundreds of bats, The stalactites and stalagmites within this cave are of the gigantic proportions. Stalactites on the eastern cave entrance are rather unique as they did not grow vertically downward. The growth of these oblique stalactites is believed to be associated with the deposition of travertine deposits by photosynthetic algae that required brighter sunlight to grow. There are ancient oyster shells attached on certain wall of the cave, a few meters above the sea level, indicating a higher ancient sea level 5000 years ago..."

The Jetty of the Bat Cave

Once we arrived at the jetty, we took the path on our left...which was able to walk though the ancient nature beauty of the forest.

The pathway the lead us to the forest

Along the way, I saw a beautiful RED Spider. Too bad the photo came out blur that I won't be able to show here. :(
There is a T-junction after 50 meters from the jetty, we gotta turn to the right to the Bat Cave. The surrounding fresh air really make us like this place very much!

I like the Green very much!

After another 30 meters, we reached the entrance of the Million Years Bat Cave.

The entrance of the Bat Cave.

I like to see the stone formation along the cave...below was one of nice stone I saw...

It was Total dark in the Cave, our boatman loan us a Torch. My daughter hold my pans tightly!

The pathway in the cave.

We continue to search for the Bats but it was empty all the way...We started to felt some cold wind and creepy! Because we were the only group in the Cave! Oh! My goodness!!

But I insist to continue our walk, so we stepped into the heart of the cave where you can't see any sunlight at all! Then suddenly, my wife said : "LOOK!" Her torch shoot on the wall on top of us and we saw hundreds and hundreds of bats hanging! WOW!

The Bat Cave of Kilim River

And my wife ask me to turn around, that were many behind me! Oh! My...

The closest bat! Less than 2 feet...

During that time, we really enjoyed looking at the bats surrounding the cave...luckily I still remember the time, it was almost dark! So we quickly walked through the cave and back to the Jetty (Where the boatman was waiting), before all the bats wake up! What a Experience! I like it!

That's end our 1 hour Mangrove Tour at Kilim Geoforest Park of Langkawi Island. You can contact Mr Halimi (boatman) 0175228325 for the Mangrove Tour. He was a nice guide! :)

End of the Buddhist Lent Day or Wan Ohk Pansa

End of the Buddhist Lent Day or Wan Ohk Pansa

It's 3 months ago since Buddhist Lent day or Wan Kao Pansa. Today is Wan Ohk Pansa, the end of Buddhist Lent and all monks who were supposed to stay inside their respective temples for 3 months are allowed outside again.

This fact is celebrated each year with big 'show' cars that ferry monks around to show them to the people around their respective temples and many people make merit by spending money and/or new clothes for the monks, which is called thod katien. In this picture you can just about make out a monk sitting in the front of this car.

A side view of the Plai Laem Temple car. All over the island similar cars were making the rounds today.

The Fish Farm at Kilim Geoforest Park of Langkawi Island

The Fish Farm (N6 24.945 E99 51.821) is located at the same area of The Hole In The Wall Floating Restaurant along the Kilim River of Langkawi Island. This activity was part of the Mangrove Tour.

The Fish Farm

The farm was not huge but it was enough for us to see all the big fishes around...
The young boy who speak fluent English had became our tour guide and started to showed us around the farm.
At first, he showed us the 'Shooting Fish' which was really interesting!

The Shooting Fish

There were many big fishes in the farm! Like this one below...

Then the boy brought us to the Stingray area, and all the rays seems like waiting at the site!

The big Black Ray!

Then the boy started to feed them with pieces of fish...

The black rays were Really Hungry!! :)

The rays overturned

The boy continued to feed the hungry rays, and he overturn the body and showed us where is the mouth located...my daughter was excited watching the rays! :)
Then we moved to the Horse Shoe Crab...this was the first time I saw the horse shoe swim...that was new to me! Haha!

The boy explain about the Horse Shoe Crab

This was the way the horse shoe swim...

"There are many foreigners settle down here in Langkawi, some of them started the restaurant business or others and own a unique floating house at the Kilim River area..." said the Boatman. Below floating house is owned by a couple of Japanese.

Nice Floating House owned by Japanese couple.

It took about 30 minutes for us to tour around the fish farm, and we continue our journey to the Millions years Bat Cave! The cave is located nearby the Kilim Jetty....

We passed by the Kilim Jetty again...
