Goodbye to November 2010

Goodbye to November 2010

And a memorable month it was. For many personal (=work) reasons and for the torrential rain that hammered Samui!

The personal reasons were that I hardly spend any at all in Samui, only about 5 days! During these 5 days Samui had a nice weather spell which was lucky for me. The reason I didn't spend that much time on Samui was because I was teaching IDC's outside of Samui, pretty much all month long; first an October/November IDC on Koh Lanta, than an IDC in Kao Lak and now I'm back on Koh Lanta again and just started a new program yesterday.

The other reason this month was memorable was the torrential rain that hit Samui during the beginning and middle of November and more or less continued with monsoon rain all month long.
My blog had over 16.500 visits and over 51.000 page views, an absolute record. Right now I'm still getting about 250 visits per day, an average of more than 100 than usual. It shows that there are plenty of visitors to Samui who are understandably worried about there holidays or are we all rubbernecking primates?

The post that had almost 3.500 page views involved some video's about the flooding, a good second with well over 1.400 page views involved early pictures of the flooding and more pictures and video towards the middle of the month did the trick for 3rd spot with almost 1.300 views. Stunning figures for my blog. Thanks for checking in folks, thanks for the comments and especially thanks to all the people that contributed with pix and/or videos.

The 2007 November was rough but not as bad as this year, 2008 was average with rain and flash floods but nothing spectacular and 2009 was stunning with hardly any rain at all!

I managed to visit some good and new restaurants, like the Red Snapper on Koh Lanta or the Mala Dim Sum in Kata, Phuket.
This year's Loy Kratong I celebrated in Kao Lak and it was very nice indeed.
My Food on Wheels series saw two more entries and there are a few more lined up for next month.

Please check out the usual suspects of my fellow Thai bloggers, I was too busy to check in on a regular base and hope to have some updates on them next month!
I did create another page however, with information on how to get to or get off Samui!

Take care and looking forward seeing you you again in December.

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 30th November, 2010

Today's weather;

Samui has some very dark clouds this morning and it's raining again. Today and tomorrow could see a lot of rain. Current temp at 7am is 25.4C. The first batch of dark clouds have already swept over and are replaced by brighter ones.

Koh Lanta is also covered under clouds but they're not as dark although I wouldn't be surprised to see some rain today. Current temp at 7am is 25.3C

Samui saw rain at various spots around the island but the Plai Laem area stayed dry, however, around 4am my family woke up from the thunder and lightning which was ferocious and lasted for about half an hour. Max temp reached 30C

Lanta was nice yesterday with some afternoon sunshine and a beautiful star ridden sky at night. max temp reached 29.7C

BY TRAIN

LRT Line 1 South Bound - Get off Abad Santos Station. Take jeepney to Divisoria on Abad Santos Avenue, get off at Recto, walk up to Soler, turn right on Soler, walk straight up to 168 Mall passing by 999 Mall

LRT Line 1 North Bound - Get off Abad Santos Station. Take jeepney to Divisoria on Abad Santos Avenue, get off at Recto, walk up to Soler Street, turn right on Soler to get to 168 Mall.

LRT Line 2 Marikina to Recto - After alighting from the train on Recto Station, take jeepney bound to Divisoria, get off at Abad Santos Avenue, walk up to Soler Street, turn right on Soler to get to 168 Mall bypassing 999 Mall.

Note: It is not advisable for LRT 1 passengers to use Doroteo Jose Station as their first stop on the way to 999 Mall especially during Holiday Season. Traffic along Recto Avenue during this season is heavy, you might stuck up for long hours before you reach Abad Santos Avenue. So the best route is from Jose Abad Santos Avenue Station.

BY JEEPNEY

Divisoria bound jeepneys from Baclaran ply the route 24/7 via Juan Luna. During Christmas Season Juan Luna is non passable for public and private vehicle. Walk towards Recto. Turn right on Sta. Elena Street to get to old 168 Mall. Once inside just explore until you see Phase 5 of 168 Mall

Divisoria bound jeepneys from Monumento and Navotas ply the route daily via Abad Santos Avenue. Once in Recto, just walk your way to 168 Shopping Mall, it's very near to the corner of Recto and Jose Abad Santos Avenue, just turn right on Soler Street, continue walking, bypass 999 Mall until 168 Mall comes into view. Phase 5 of 168 Mall is up ahead, taller than the old 168 Mall, standing out from the distance.

Divisoria bound jeepneys from Marikina, Cubao and Sta Mesa Area, ply the route 24/7 via Aurora Avenue via Magsaysay Blvd. Once near Abad Santos, you can walk your way to 168 Shopping Mall or take one of many pedi cabs in the area.

Traffic in the Area

For route #1, traffic along Jose Abad Santos is moderate. Bottelneck builds upon approaching the intersection of Jose Abad Santos and Recto Avenue, but still manageable. This is the less congested road among the five routes given here. However, because of holiday season, always expect the worse in terms of traffic. It is advisable to plan your Christmas Shopping early in the morning.

For route #2, this is the most simple route but the most congested, too. Because of the Christmas Season, bottleneck builds up already right after crossing Tomas Mapua, and it's still a long way to go before you reach Masangkay Street. Remember, Recto Avenue is the major road for passenger jeepneys coming to Divisoria from Marikina, Cubao, Sta Mesa, Pasig and even Quiapo. So if you can get around the area, you might want to take route #3 by turning right onto Oroquieta Street. Oroquieta Street is the street before Avenida and it is where Philippine Rabbit buses from province pass through to get to their terminal. On Oroquieta Street, just go straight ahead then turn left on Fugoso Street and follow route #3 direction. Warning: there's no left turn on Tomas Mapua Street from Recto Avenue. Avoid the inconvenience brought by MMDA Traffic Enforcer's apprehension. Drive smart.

For route #3, you might be discourage on turning right to Soler but don't worry. The bottleneck you might encounter is momentarily. The traffic is caused by vehicles turning right onto the next street of San Bernardo. After San Bernardo Street, traffic is manageable up to Reina Regente. Nevertheless, because of the holiday season, there are some delay in traffic movement but MMDA Traffic Enforcers are there to manage the traffic so don't be agitated when you stop from time to time. I saw how they manage the traffic and it was excellent. After 10 minute wait, you will be driving along Soler without stopping up to Reina Regente. To avoid traffic, all along, plan your Christmas Shopping ahead of time and schedule it early in the morning.

For route #4, bottleneck builds up heavily on Reina Regente upon approaching Felipe Street. Because of holiday season. please expect worse traffic situation even before you reach Reina Regente. To make sure you arrive without encountering so much traffic, plan your Christmas Shopping early in the morning.

For route #5, Evangelista Street is teeming with lots of people and sidewalk vendors, and many car drivers park their vehicles along Evangelista to buy some items. So, expect slow movement. Traffic along Soler Street is in Traffic For route #3. To avoid traffic, always plan your Christmas Shopping early in the morning.

LRT-1 Monumento Station Destinations

Monumento is where you find the avenue of department stores just walking distance from the LRT 1 station. They stand side by side along Rizal Avenue where major provincial bus companies like Victory Bus are also located. Monumento Station formerly held the distinction of being the last station of LRT-1 north of Metro Manila before the extension is built and new stations opened (Balintawak, Roosevelt and soon North common station of LRT-1 and MRT-3). This might be one of the reasons why plenty of hotels also flourish here.

Free Parking in 999 Mall Full as early as 8 am

It's twenty seven days before Christmas and influx of shoppers in Divisoria is now full to the brim. Most of us think of only one thing - shop and shop and shop. But the bottom line is we always go for the lowest price without compromising the convenience. No wonder my post about 999 Mall, the newest shopping destination in Divisoria gets the most numbers of visitors ever since it was posted here. So I must inform those shoppers who bring their cars to 999 Mall this shopping season on one crucial situation - parking.

We all know that parking area on the basement of 999 Mall is free. But I've learned that as early as 8 am, entrance to the parking is already closed because there's no more available parking slots. And you don't have any choice but to park your car in the next convenient parking area, and that's in the 168 Mall. Parking there is so massive and equally convenient because it's so spacious. But parking in 168 is not free. First 3 hours parking fee is Php 50.00 and Php 20.00 per hour hereafter. So for those who really want to save money, my tip is to arrive at 999 Mall parking entrance as early as 7 am. That's mean you must leave your home as early as 6 am, depending on where will you be coming from.

One main advantage of parking in 999 Mall is less stress shopping. If your car is parked in secured area without toll, you can take your time in shopping. You can go out of 999 Mall and explore other Malls like 168 Mall and Tutuban Mall, buy some stuffs from there, and get back to your car to load those items and head back again to other areas. Considering the complete lines of products inside 999 Mall, you have more options. It's just sometimes it's not enough for us to be contented in one shopping location. We always go out of our way to look for more. You can take your time even if it takes you 8 hours, you don't accumulate expenses in parking.

U-Turn Slots Along Quezon Avenue

You already know the significance of familiarizing ourselves to locations of U-Turns on our major thoroughfares, most especially to those who drive. My unpleasant experience last Monday on the road after heavy rains encourage me to create this post about locations of U-Turn slots along Quezon Avenue. You don't need to remember them in complete details but if you drive in going places, it's helpful that you have knowledge as to where to turn when making a detour is inevitable.

On the map below are U-Turn slots along Quezon Avenue from Welcome Rotonda to EDSA. Each U-turn has the corresponding destinations. Click placemarks to see establishments that can be reach in a perticular U-Turn. Drag map towards left-bottom to view all U-turns along the whole stretch of Quezon Avenue up to EDSA. Green placemarks indicate they're turning back onto Welcome Rotonda, Espana area while red placemarks indicate they're turning back onto EDSA.

Sri Takua Pa

Phuket is an island, but only just. Unlike other islands such as Phi Phi, Koh Samui or Koh Chang, you can drive to Phuket from the mainland, across the Sarasin Bridge which was first built in 1967. The old bridge has since been replaced and another new one is being built at the moment. So we are not "cut off" here! Phuket is a big island, but it's also very easy to head north over the bridge into Phang Nga province and beyond. Back in April we headed to Khao Sok national park and stayed a night at the Cliff and River Jungle Resort. To get there from Phuket you drive via Khao Lak and Takua Pa. Simple enough, but we took a wrong turn in Takua Pa town and followed a winding road to an old town which looked very similar to old Phuket. We didn't stick around, we wanted to get to Khao Sok, but thought it looked interesting.. We went to Khao Sok again at the end of September and on the way home we stopped again in the little town of Sri Takua Pa for a walk.

I know nothing of this towns history, so if any scholars are reading, please do leave a comment! Looks like much of the town was built in the early 20th century around the same time as Phuket Town, and the local people seem to be Thai-Chinese. When we stopped, the shrine in the center of town was being painted ready for the vegetarian festival due to start a week later.

Painting the Shrine

The town was very quiet. Nearby Takua Pa is a busy place and a major junction where the road heads east to Surat Thani, south to Phuket and north to Ranong. Maybe Sri Takua Pa was once more important, but it seemed to me like the town that time forgot! There are only a couple of streets and we walked up the largest, passing another Chinese shrine and stopping at a little hardware store with a very friendly owner. The kids found a little steel tape measure which dad bought for them. My 5 year old boy likes to measure things and is always happy to "help" dad with odd jobs around the house :)

Hardware Store

We loved this little place. So friendly and quiet. I reckon this used to be on the main road but when the new road came... Sri Takua Pa became a forgotten place. Some of the shops were like a timewarp. Tell me the photo below was not taken in 1960!

Old Shop

Another shop at the crossroads opposite the shrine had an almost empty display with some olde style toys - I am sure we'll pass through again and if the train is still there, I'll buy it for my boy!

Puff-Puff Loco

You can see the covered walkway behind my son in the photo above, much like can be found along Thalang Road in Phuket. The old style shophouses had these covered walkways to allow people to pass from shop to shop out of the sun (or rain). Sri Takua Pa does look a bit faded, and there are a few newer buildings, but in parts, it's just as nice as the old part of Phuket Town and many houses had these little shrines outside like the one below:

Shrine

Sri Takua Pa is definitely not a "happening" place, but IS a good place to get a taste of real life, and well worth a visit. It's not so far from Khao Lak, and certainly a worthwhile stop off on the way to Khao Sok.. if you can find it. We found the town by accident first time, and on this visit we couldn't remember which wrong turn we'd taken the first time, but eventually figured it out!

A couple more local shops...

Brushes

Sri Takua Pa Barber!

More Photos of Sri Takua Pa

It's for places like Sri Takua Pa that I like to explore the backroads, and proof that taking a wrong turn now and then can be a good thing! I mean, I know most people are happy to stay on the beach, take a few tours, eat some good food, but if you stick to the well beaten path in Phuket, you don't really see Thailand. Two roads diverged in a wood, and I ... I took the one less traveled by.

Directions to Centris Walk

By Car

Route #1

Coming from Commonwealth Avenue, take Elliptical Road towards Quezon Avenue. On Quezon Avenue, go straight but avoid the tunnel. Turn left on BIR Road then turn right onto NIA Road. Turn right onto NIA Northsite Road. Finally, turn right onto EDSA staying to the innermost side of the road but make sure your right signal light is on to avoid apprehension if ever because at this time you are driving on the bus lane. Entrance to the Centris Walk is visible momentarily.

This is the best route if your main concern is to avoid the perennial traffic of EDSA and Quezon Avenue intersections and U-Turns.

Route #2

From Mindanao Avenue, turn left on North Avenue then turn right onto Agham Road. Drive all the way crossing Quezon Avenue. You are now driving on BIR Road, Agham Road ends up in Quezon Avenue. Follow directions given in Route #1.

This is the less congested route compare to EDSA from your location anywhere in Mindanao Avenue. This route can be taken by car drivers from Novaliches and Project 8 as well as from Bulacan, Pampanga and the rest of Northern Luzon.

Route #3

From San Juan and Sta Mesa Area, take G. Araneta Avenue, turn right onto E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue then turn left on Tomas Morato Avenue. Drive all the way to Eugenio Lopez Street, this is where ABS CBN Headquarters is located. Turn left on one way Eugenio Lopez Street. Go straight pass by Pinoy Big Brother House that can be seen on your left. Go straight to Scout Albano Street then turn right onto Quezon Avenue. You must turn right onto EDSA so avoid going onto the tunnel. Upon turning right onto EDSA, you must immediately make a U-Turn onto Quezon Avenue again. This is where the bottleneck builds up heavily so be patience. The U-turn is right under the EDSA flyover, be careful not to overlook. After the U-Turn you must turn right onto Quezon Avenue but stay to the right turning lane, do not take the wide main Quezon Avenue that will bring you way too far and lost your way. Finally, turn right onto the next service road at the back of the Eton Centris Building also known as Centris Station, which is located at the corner of Quezon Avenue and EDSA. Up ahead is the parking entrance of the Centris Walk.

Route #4

From Sampaloc and Espana area, take Quezon Avenue all the way to Timog. Turn right onto Timog Avenue to avoid heavier traffic on the area. Turn left on Panay Avenue, drive all the way to Sgt. Esguerra Avenue. Turn left on Sgt. Esguerra then turn right onto Quezon Avenue, then follow the rest of the directions on Route #3.

By Train

If you are coming from Marikina and Pasig area, commuting by train, take LRT Line 2 and get off at Araneta Center Station. Take MRT-3 North bound. Get off at Quezon Avenue Station.

If you are coming from Caloocan, commuting by train, take LRT-1 and get off at Roosevelt Station. Take a bus to North Avenue Station of MRT-3. Take another train ride to Quezon Avenue Station.

If you are commuting by train coming from Recto Station of LRT-2, get off at Araneta Center Station and take another train ride on Farmer's Station of MRT-3 North bound and get off at Quezon Avenue Station.

Finally, if you are coming from Makati, Pasay, Mandaluyong area, take MRT-3 train at the nearest station and get off at Quezon Avenue Station.

By Bus and Jeepney

All buses plying the route of Edsa stops on Quezon Avenue except bus stop on the South bound lane from Monumento is too far that taking a train is much more convenient.

With regards to passenger jeepneys, some of them stop exactly at Centris Bldg which is exactly where the Centris Walk is near. Jeepneys bound to Quaipo from Fairview and vice versa that pass by Centris are those with sign MRT HIGHWAY. You have to be very careful in taking ride as jeepneys without this sign go straight through the tunnel.
