Today's weather;

Just like yesterday, Samui is having another glorious morning with a blue sky and hardly any clouds at all. Current temp at 7am is 25.5C

Namuang waterfall, a good place to visit on your trip around the island

Yesterday saw blue skies during the morning and a few clouds during the afternoon but it was still sunny on Samui all day long! Max temp reached 29.8C

Today's weather;

Samui has more clouds this morning, just like the last week. Current temp is around 26C

Yesterday saw another dry day on Samui with some sunshine during the afternoon. Me and my family took a trip around the island and visited the Namuang waterfall in Baan Namuang where we had some Isaan style food.

Max temp reached around 29C

Kila Amphur Koh Samui 2010

Today was a busy day, starting out with this years version of the Kila Amphur in Baan Namuang. Remember last years version? No worries if you didn't, my wife thought I wasn't there, but I got the pictures to proof it!

After visiting here, I went home for some work on my website and after that we visited my sister and her family in their hotel, the Chaweng Cove Resotel and enjoyed some relaxing time at the pool and the ocean.

The Kila Amphur is a gathering of the school tribes and is held throughout the country, at different days in various provinces.

This years edition was a hot variation and I was very glad to know that my sons school was number 4 in the picking order and it was over and done with a lot earlier compared to the other schools and and kids and parents, who had to wait a lot longer before their tour around the track field could start. We were out of there in a flash today! It was uncomfortably hot, that early in the morning at 8am!

The place was packed with kids, teachers and parents however, just like each year. The interesting variation for me was to see a lot more Westerners out there today, compared to 4 or 5 years ago when I went for the first time and I was about the only Westerner out there!

The mayor and his compatriots are sitting high and dry in the shade, can't blame them! They have another two days to go of this gathering! I do pity them in this case.

Up to next year, when we probably have to be there for two days, one day for my son and one day for my daughter, maybe I need to coordinate this next year better and plan some dive courses around this time.

Today's weather;

A thin layer of overcast is still in the sky but I expect this to be burnt away by the sun one this starts to heat up. Current temp at 7 am is 26.7C.

Yesterday was another hot and sunny day with a max temp of 33.3C. During the late afternoon and early evening we had two showers though, one with thunder and lightning, it cooled things down a bit which I welcomed!

We went around the island yesterday, with visiting friends. At the waterfall at Baan Namuang I saw a typical Thai event happen in front of me, almost not recognising how unusual this may be for a Westerner.



The Thai ice cream vendor! Motorised by his motorbike with side car and besieged by all Thai kids and their parents.

As you can see, they are popular and the ice actually tastes good. Strangely enough, Thais find it absolutely normal to stick ice between a bun together with some sticky rice!

Namuang Waterfall, Baan Namuang

Today was finally a Sunday since a while that I could spend with the family. We decided on a trip around the island, something we tend to do on a regular base.

After having driven through Hua Thanon, where I took some pictures of some old style traditional Samui/Hainan houses, we went via Baan Tong Krut, where there's a rum distillery on which I like to report at a later time, when they're in season, around December to April to Baan Taling Gnaam, where we had a quick glance into the Wat Kiri Wongkaram.

After the Temple visit we were on the road again to Namuang Waterfall and the elephants they have near the parking lot.

My son loves elephants and whenever he sees an elephant statue somewhere, and there are plenty of them in Thailand, he's in a state! Imagine when we go to see real live elephants, excitement was in the air! He loved it!

Elephant safaris are offered, currently at 600,-THB per person.

On the way to the actual waterfall are a handful of restaurants, mainly serving good Isaan food, like Naam Tok, Laab, Som Tam and some good BBQ-ed chicken (Kai Yang). One restaurant in particular is described in a different post on this blog.

This information plaque tells us how important the waterfall is to Samui, various Kings of the Chakra dynasty have visited the waterfall, Rama V and his Queen, Queen Saovapa Pongsi, later King Rama III visited once and the current King, King Bhumibol, Rama IX and his Queen visited on April 27, 1962.
It's a tine fall, consisting with a small reservoir at the fall base.

The reservoir at the base of the fall, inviting to swimmers. usually Thai families hang out at the opposite, picnicking through the day.

Another great place to stop during a trip around the island and a good place to stop and get something to eat or have a refreshing young coconut to drink and a favorite of our family, I lost track of how many times we visited this place already.
