Pictures of speedboat after Full Moon Party collision

Pictures of speedboat after Full Moon Party collision

After my post with an update about the collision of two speedboats during the transfer of passengers between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan during the Full Moon Party, a couple of days ago, I now got hold of pictures of one of the boats involved in the collision.

These are pictures of the Phummipat 59, owner by Petcharat and this is the boat that has full insurance.

Looking at the size of the hole in this boat, it's a wonder that all passengers survived. Apparently everybody was ordered to wear life jackets during the trip from Samui to Koh Phangan.

Let's hope that accidents like this won't happen again!

With thanks to Steve for the pictures and to Stephan and Adam who both commented on this post and claim to have been on this boat during the accident.

Fruit Stall around Kintamani area, Bali

There were many fruit stall like this along the road to Kintamani. So we decided to stop at one of the stall. I was attracted by the way they display the fruits...unique and nice!
The Fruit Stall (S8 17.458 E115 21.612) was located along the way while we drove back to Ubud, Bali.

There was not much different from the food stall at Johor Bahru, except this...rarely can see it around JB area...

Do you know what is the name of the fruit above and below?

The tomatoes of Kintamani, Bali

We did bought some fruits to enjoy along the journey back to Ubud...

Is this mandarin? Or orange?

Goodbye to June 2010

Goodbye to June 2010

Here we are again, gathering around the last bits of this month and waving goodbye to it.

The weather was good this month, there was plenty of sun filled days during this month but there was also, at last, some rain. Especially the middle towards to end of the end of the month saw some much needed rain coming down on Samui. Overall it was a very warm month though.
It's interesting to see how my archives grow and I can look back at reports for a warm and sunny 2009, a similar 2008 and a wet 2007 version with only a dry stretch in the middle of the month.

The other thing I'm happy about this month is that the Netherlands football team made it to the quarter finals of the current World Championships in South Africa, although I'm not too happy about the way they did it, with rather boring football. Next opponent is Brazil, if the team can win that game, I see some serious possibilities for winning the cup this time around.

Last but not least, a look at some other Thai related blogs that I enjoy reading which can be found on my blog roll;

The first one in alphabetical order is Martyn's Beyond the Mango Juice, who in the right spirit of this World Championship football month wrote about a football stadium he visited in Udon Thani. Visiting football stadiums is something I like to do as well, my list of football stadiums is relatively small but includes Saigon, Hanoi, Phnom Phen and Guatemala City just to name a few exotic ones. Excellent post!

Next in line is a very interesting blog about the administrative subdivisions of Thailand - history, current news, facts hardly found in English, reviews of corresponding books, the Wikipedia coverage of these entities...I present you; Changwat, Amphoe, Tambon. Andreas puts lots if time and effort in this blog and he has most certainly something to show for, a very interesting blog indeed.
One post this month deals with district levels and the rules of the categorization of districts into small, medium and large, and which authority is responsible for this. Mind boggling and very interesting, or did I say that already?
Andreas also has a blog which he named 'My Unseen Thailand' which is also absolutely worthwhile checking out, although he's seemingly running out of blogs to write. The name tells it all!

On to my brother or sister site, Jamie's Phuket weather blog. Jamie writes good posts and has a big mofo of a camera and he shot some nice Thai girl pix in his latest post about the low season weather in which he also visits the 2nd Kathu village street culture festival. That must be where the picture come from.

Mike at My Thai Friend talks about an everlasting danger in Thailand, your neighbours and what great plans they may come up with, like opening a Karaoke bar next to your place in paradise! There's a little what will or can protect you in case one of your neighbours come up with this in their eyes most likely brilliant idea! TIT or This is Thailand in full swing. Thanks for the post Mike.

Malcolm, just looking at you in that hammock makes me feel like visiting you straight away. Being retired looks very promising this way! As a matter of fact, Malcolm is retired in Thailand and loving it, no wonder! He comes up with a post that tells you everything about coconuts that you always wanted to know but never dared to ask. As always, a pleasure to read.

Lawrence lives in Phana, a small town in the lower Northeast (Isan) of Thailand. He wrote two great posts about Lao PDR, not really about Phana his time around but of great interest to me with some nice pictures of the Plain of Jars or PDJ and the Hmong, the original people that lived there. Thanks for the posts Lawrence.

Another seemingly Dutch blogger, Siam Rick can be found in Canada but blogging away about Thailand and Asia. He has some interesting facts and stats about a bloggers life and the hits and misses you can have with blogs.

The new kid on the block is Bonsoong, a Thai blogger who isn't whatever people say he is. I like that! One of his posts was about a Thai fish on Chaam beach. Check it out!

That's it folks, more next month.

Very low water around Koh Samui

Very low water around Koh Samui

This year the low water around Samui seems to have found a new low, so to speak. During the 11 years that I've been here now, I've seen some low tides, especially around this time of the year, but this year seems to be taking the stroedel.

Around Nathon, where I took these pictures, the water recedes a lot each year but now the water also recedes at places that usually stay covered in water.

The Thai people love the low tide and go out in masses to look for various kinds of shells ('hoy'), octopus ('waai') and small fish. My mother in law said the other that it was the first time in her life that she could just pick up small fish from the beach near Plai Laem that were caught out by the low water. This made for some good deep fried fish for our son!

Here's another picture of Nathon with the pier and an incoming ferry in the background. You could almost organise soccer games on these vast amounts of space!

29th June, 2010

Today's weather;

Once more a cloudy sky is ruling over Samui in the morning. That may soon be over! Current temp at 7am is 26.8C

Yesterday saw overcast pretty much all day but no rain wherever I wentalthough there must've been some pour down last night, looking at the wet spots on the road this morning. Max temp reached 32.7C

The Netherlands football team is now set up to meet Brasil this coming Friday. Oranje seriously needs to turn on the style if they want to progress to the semis!

Update on the speed boat collision between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

Update on the speed boat collision between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

An update from the Bangkok Post today by Supapong Chaolan, interesting is that one of the boats was exactly the same boat that flipped over in January 2005 when they tempered with the steering cords;

SURAT THANI : At least 40 people have been injured in a head-on collision between two speedboats carrying tourists taking part in a full-moon party on Koh Phangan.
The collision happened about 12.30am yesterday in waters between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

The force of the impact severely damaged the two speedboats and threw passengers into the water.

They were left stranded in the sea before being rescued by marine police and passing speedboats. There was heavy rain and strong winds when the accident happened.

Twenty-nine injured passengers were sent to Bangkok Samui Hospital, six were admitted to Ban Don International Hospital on Koh Samui and five to Thai International Hospital Koh Samui.

Ten foreigners _ three Britons, five Australians, one Ukrainian and one Singaporean _ were among the injured.

One speedboat, Phummipat 59, was carrying 23 tourists who were returning from a full-moon party on Koh Phangan to Koh Samui.

It collided with another speedboat, Sawasdi Chalermchoke Nawa5, which was taking 39 passengers from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan. The Sawasdi Chalerm choke Nawa5 is owned by Sea Beach Tour and Transport Co.

Preecha Chorsuwannachart, a passenger on board the Sawasdi Chalermchoke Nawa 5, said the boat travelled at high speed and did not have its signal lights switched on.

Mr Preecha, who is a member of the Nonthaburi provincial administration organisation, said the boat collided with the other boat, throwing passengers into the sea.

Weeraphan Phetchara, who was driving the Phummipat 59, said he did not see the signal lights of the other boat before the collision.

Thuenjai Phetcharat, who runs Phetcharat Marina Co which owns the Phummipat 59, said the company has accident insurance to cover passengers. They will each receive 100,000 baht.

She said she is willing to bring the driver of the Phummipat 59 to police for questioning.

Police said the licence for the Sawasdi Chalermchoke Nawa 5 has expired and not been renewed and it also has no insurance documents.

The Sawasdi Chalermchoke Nawa 5 capsized on Jan 25, 2005, while taking tourists from a full-moon party on Koh Pha-ngan. Fifteen passengers drowned in the accident. Police said the boat sank because it was overloaded.

Kintamani and Mount Batur at North Bali, Indonesia

"Kintamani is the most favorite tourist destinations in Bali with the active volcano of mount Batur and beautiful lake. Kintamani is surrounded by the captivating nature and there are six ancient villages around cauldron of Batur Lake which is often conceived by Bali Age Village. The local people from these Bali Age villages own the unique cultures, houses and life style. Kintamani Area is consisted of some Villages those are Kedisan Village , Buahan, Abang, Trunyan, Songan, South Batur, Middle Batur, North Batur, Sukawana and Kintamani Village . The total of resident in these area are about 15 thousand who are mostly working as farmer, merchant, or work at industrial tourism." Source from here.

Kintamani (S8 16.614 E115 21.051) is located at the north of the Bali Island. The entrance fee was rp22,000.00 for the 6 adults and 2 children. We decided to view the Volcano Mount Batur at one of the restaurant named 'Grand Puncak Sari' (S8 16.352 E115 20.839).

"Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung, Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali (or Ubud) ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago." Source from Wiki.

Grand Puncak Sari Hotel and Restaurant

The Grand Puncak Sari Restaurant is located about 700 meter from the entrance of Kintamani. The restaurant dining area are divided into indoor and outdoor 2 session. They are serving buffet lunch while we arrived, but we already had our lunch at Warung Ibu Oka and we just intend for a drink. So we ONLY allow to sit indoor where the outdoor session (better view of Mount Batur) is for customers who order the food! That's normal, don't worry! :)

The indoor area of Grand Puncak Sari Restaurant

This was the first time I tasted the Bali Coffee! Hmm...taste nice!

The Bali Coffee - rp.6,500.00 (MYR2.50 / USD0.75)

I did check the altitude of the restaurant was 1360 meter from Garmin etrex HCX GPS device.

The GPS device shows altitude at 1360meter

Some photos of the Breathtaking view of Mount Batur and the Batur Lake...

The Mount (Gunung) Batur Volcano of Bali

You can see the Lava clearly from this photo above

Lake Batur from far away...

Too bad the summit of Mount Batur was covered with thick clouds...
The weather at Kintamani is cooling, temperature was around 23C-26C. I can imagine how nice if we put a night at the Hotel here...but beside enjoy the cool air at night, there might not have other activity. Quite boring...

We were off from the restaurant after 30 minutes rest, and still looking for a better viewing area for the Volcano...and we found this! About 2.5km East from the restaurant (S8 16.972 E115 21.867). The view was much better! And the area we stand were closer to the Lake Batur.

The local women selling drinks to visitors

Many peoples gather around here to witnesses the Beauty of Mount Batur! I like it very much!

And more closer to Lake Batur

After all photos were taken...we continue our journey to the next tourist hotspot and bye-bye to the Beautiful Nature!

28th June, 2010

Today's weather;

Once more heavy clouds are hanging low over Samui and sunshine doesn't seems to be a real option today. Current temp at 7am is 27.8C

Yesterday saw merely overcast and occasionally a watery sun tried to peak through the clouds. In the evening it rained again. Max temp reached 31.5C

Tegallalang Rice Terrace at North Ubud Town, Bali

"Tegallalang is a well known area to the north of Ubud in the centre of Bali.  It is the major area for handicraft production in Bali, but also has a surprising amount of other businesses, often not visible to the passing tourist.
Tegallalang has just about every form of handicraft made in Bali.  This site showcases those shops and businesses creating these products." Source from here.

Tegallalang Rice Terrace at Bali

We tooks 30 minutes (about 10km) from the Warung Ibu Oka Ubud town to this Tegallalang Rice Terrace (S8 25.984 E115 16.715). Even the distance was not far but because of the narrow street and slow traffic.
This is one of the A Must stop area while on the way to Kintamani, it's just because of the Stunning Rice Terrace!

Another view of the Rice Terrace

This area has many Wood carving, souvenir shops & cafes. We took our sweet time to shop around...Please remember, bargain is necessary!!

Souvenir shops are everywhere...

I found out the wood carving souvenir here were really interesting! There were many shape and item that I haven't see it before! :)

Below photos are 18X! :) If you are children reading beside you, please temporary close their eyes...Haha!

The shop told me that...THIS IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN BALI! Interesting!

Beside the woodcraft, you also can find some other carving like below...

There are many peoples selling the souvenir around without proper shop unit. They will approach all the visitors, if you interested what they are selling, Bargain is A Must! Please take note, once you bought anything from them...another BIG group of peoples will come towards you! (I almost push into the drain) Haha! Anyway, I don't blame them, that's the way they make for living...

I called them 'The Postcard Boys'. They were aggressive!

Please notice if there's something look like the photo below along the way or in front of their shop, Don't step on it! This is one of the Hinduism praying...(correct me if I'm wrong)

After your shopping around the shops, you can have a cup of Bali Coffee at most of the cafe in this area...relax and enjoy yourself beside this beautiful Rice Terrace...

The Cafe by the side of the Rice Terrace

Too bad we don't have much time that day, because it was cloudy and we afraid to miss the spectacular view of Mount Batur. So we had to move on by skipping the coffee over here...anyway, I will be Back! :)
You can view the Rice Terrace from the top at Google Earth too.

After about an hour at Tegallalang Rice Terrace, we continue our journey to Kintamani...

27th June, 2010

Today's weather;

It's cloudy and it looks wet outside with a current temp of 26C at 7am.

Yesterday saw a very hot day, not necessarily with a lot of sunshine though. Max temp reached 34.7C.

Last night I started watching the Uruguay vs South Korean game but decided to get some sleep during half time, around 9.45 local time. Around 10am or shortly after , a storm developed with thunder and lighting and strong winds and lots of rain! Around the same time, two speedboats collided trafficking people to/from the full moon party in the Bang Rak area. Over 30 ambulances and lots of police and bystanders came out and apparently around 30 people have been rescued sofar (last report last night). If the boats were full, another 40 or so are unaccounted for. I'm sure there will be a death toll on this accident (unconfirmed reports mention up to 11 as of last night), due to the low viz at the time being and people being intoxicated when they hit the water. I'm sure there's more to follow on this story.

It's the second time a speedboat accident happens during a Full Moon Party, the other taking 16 lives on 25th January, 2005. At least this time around all passengers being fished out of the water and arriving at land, were wearing life jackets.

An update on the accident by the Nation reveals that 39 people were rescued and two are still missing and that the accident occurred around 11.45pm on route to Koh Phangan.

For the record, I slept through everything, the storm, the thunder and all ambulances possibly passing by our house, no doubt with screaming sirens

Radar Hill - Highest Road in Phuket

Until last year, I thought Radar Hill was the highest point in Phuket - the highest hill. Everyone who comes to Phuket will see Radar Hill (real name Khao Mai Tao Sip Song) - it's the big hill behind Patong Beach with the radar dome on top. BUT it's not actually the highest hill. Another hill a little to the North above Kathu Waterfall tops out around 30m higher - I hiked up here in September - see Hiking to the Roof of Phuket.

Well, even if Radar Hill is the second highest hill, it certainly boasts the highest road. You can drive all the way to the top.. almost.. you cannot quite hit the summit since the radar is a military installation, so when you are 95% of the way up you reach a gate and armed soldiers. The road by the gate is almost half a kilometer above sea level. We've been up here before and I blogged about it some 4 years ago here, but we'd not driven up this hill for a while, and last Sunday we had an hour to waste while our son was at football practice.. weather was a bit wet, but I figured we'd still get some great views on the way up before entering the cloud line. Actually, it turned out to be great, our daughter loved being "in the clouds" and our son was quite upset to hear that we'd done such an exciting thing without him... which means I think we have to drive up again this weekend!

The road up is in good condition, but steep in places. The start of the road is off Chao Fa West Road about 1km north of Chalong Temple. Follow the sign that says "Villa Zolitude". You go past a small golf course and hit Villa Zolitude as the road starts to climb. Keep going... you wind up into the hills, it's very green, and views start to appear through the trees.

Road up to Radar Hill

View over Band Wad reservoir and Kathu

(above) this is Bang Wad Reservoir and beyond is part of Kathu.. in fact you can see our house from here.. if you had a very good telescope!

As we climbed higher, we entered the clouds. Unsurprisingly, we were the only people up here looking at views. Indeed any time we come up here we are the only people... everyone else goes up to the Big Buddha or Rang Hill (in Phuket Town).

Road heading into the clouds near the top of Radar Hill

We stopped right by the gate where there is space to turn around easily. From just below the gate you get a view over Patong. There are signs to remind you that this is a restricted area and just past that sign you see the southern part of Patong through the trees, and in this case, through the clouds...

View over Patong from Radar Hill

A little black cat came to say hello to us. What the hell are you doing up a 500m high hill, cat? We thought about taking him home.. but he wandered off into the trees... and about 1 minute later we heard the sounds of a cat fighting. And then silence. We reckon he might have got ambushed by a big snake. We saw a snake one time as we drove up this hill, a rather nasty pit viper. Oh well, RIP cat, I think.

From the road near the gate, the top of the Buddha hill is visible. Well, it should be.. On this morning it was in the clouds, but there were fleeting glimpses of the 45m high white marble Buddha through gaps in the clouds...

Big Buddha seen from Radar Hill

A little below the top, around 370m above sea level, there is a small parking spot on the left side as you come up and just as the road does a series of sharp curves. It's pretty steep here, but you can park by the side of the road where you can get some views over Patong; and in the other direction you see hills and can see over to Chalong Bay too. We stopped on the way down.

Road up radar Hill - you can stop at this point for some views

First thing I saw was not the view but this monster:

Scary Insect

A most impressive beast! Oh yes, and a view over Patong, better from here, less trees and no clouds in the way...

View over Patong from near the top of Radar Hill

Road here is very steep - I think the photo below shows that. A Honda Wave would be straining up this one! And if you come up in a car make sure the brakes work!

Steep road up Radar Hill

And this view from the same stop, looking away from Patong towards Phuket Town with heavy clouds threatening. A bit of rain and cloud does not stop us! Don't be stuck in your hotel room if the sky looks dark. Get out and about. Hiring a car is a good idea in Phuket, it's a big island, go and explore. Even on a rainy day, it's not going to be wet all day, and it's not going to be wet everywhere on the island.

View from Radar Hill looking towards Phuket Town

Over the years I have enjoyed days when we just drive around and follow back roads. Phuket is full of surprises, and it's on these back roads that you find the real Phuket rather than the Phuket-by-the-sea. There's more to Phuket.
